Go Behind The Scenes of Gilliam's IMAGINARIUM OF DOCTOR PARNASSUS

A major pet peeve of mine in recent months: watching as writer after writer after writer referred to The Dark Knight as Heath Ledger's final film. It made for good copy, sure, and played into the whole mystique of that film, but it's simply not true, never was, and everybody saying so should have - and probably did - know better. Ledger's final film - he died at roughly the mid point of production, being replaced by the trio of Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell - was Terry Gilliam's Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.

For months now we've been writing about the struggles Gilliam has endured to get this film made - the poor man is just incredibly snake bitten - with the behind the scenes issues over running the film itself. But no more. The first proper bit of material from the film itself has arrived in the form of a behind the scenes reel that includes no footage but does include Gilliam talking about his work, still shots of the actors and sets, concept paintings and some CG animatics.

Dr Parnassus is cursed with a dark secret. Long ago he made a bet with the devil, Mr Nick, in which he won immortality. Many centuries later, on meeting his one true love, Dr Parnassus made another deal with the devil, trading his immortality for youth, on condition that when his first-born reached its 16th birthday he or she would become the property of Mr Nick. Valentina is now rapidly approaching this 'coming of age' milestone and Dr Parnassus is desperate to protect her from her impending fate. Mr Nick arrives to collect but, always keen to make a bet, renegotiates the wager. Now the winner of Valentina will be determined by whoever seduces the first five souls ...

Christopher Plummer stars as Parnassus, Tom Waits as Mr. Nick. Waits as the devil? Yes, please. Check the reel below the break.

Can't wait to see this.

BTW there is a podcast from NPR called "All Songs Considered" that has a live Tom Waits concert from this year recorded in Georgia. It will melt your brain. Check it out.

That is pretty amazing. I just watched Time Bandits for the first time the other night and if it is anything like that(which Gilliam mentions it will be), then I can't wait!

Heath Ledger didn't get to finish Imaginarium, so i would still consider The Dark Knight his "final film." it's like if an author leaves behind an uncompleted manuscript, then his last completed book would considered his final.
