Well, glory be. We've been talking about this one for a good while and a full trailer has just shown up for JL Vara's genre-buster South of Heaven. A little bit Dick Tracy, a little bit spaghetti western, a little bit giallo, there's all sorts of stuff thrown into the pot here and it makes for one odd little stew. Hit the links below for our earlier coverage and check the fantastic trailer out below the break in the Twitch Player!

Woah. Looks great, but it has two major issues for me. The Sound is AWFUL! Get these guys a budget. This film seems as though it might be an awkward viewing experience technically. Set designs, customes, everything Mise En Scene looks GREAT! But it also looks like it was shot on cheap(ish) Hi Def that was lit to look like film which is a weird pet peeve of mine.
The acting seems campy in a terrific way. It's tough to nail weird & quirky accents without it seeming gimmicky or too over the top. I also generally hate stylized dialouge. Blow me, Diablo Cody and Tarintino. But like Rian Johnson's Brick, I'm loving the snazzy lines. But once again, the dialouge and foley sounds like it was recorded in a tin can with an in camera micophrone on some crappy prosumer level equipment. Not befitting of something that looks so slick and epic.
Still VERY excited, but man, I hope the sound is cleaned up for festival play/dvd.
Oh, and I hate the cheapy, poorly done flash animations. They're really bland looking. I hope they're not actually in film cause they clash real bad with the footage that I'm seeing. Maybe if they resembled kitsche 50's comic art it'd work.
Still though... I'm looking forward to this. I just don't hope I have to wait a year or 2 to see it. Particularly since the Philadelphia Film festival has burned its bridges with all of their good programmers and they probably won't get this.
This looks AWESOME!
Out of curiosity, what happened to the Philadelphia film festival?
