Fresh Images And Behind The Scenes Video From Refn's Viking Epic VALHALLA RISING!

by Todd Brown, August 17, 2008 1:42 AM

Yes, there's just something about vikings that gets the imagination going, isn't there? And when you take vikings and pair them with Pusher director Nicholas Winding Refn and star Mads Mikkelsen you have the potential for something absolutely spectacular. The film is Valhalla Rising and it does just that. Refn has jokingly referred to the film as Pusher 600 BC so you know you're going to get something truly raw and intense out of this, an assumption backed up by the first block of stills to arrive from the film. We ran the first shot of Mikkelsen in character a while back and now another block of shots has arrived online along with a behind the scenes video that includes footage of a very grizzled Mikkelsen in character.

For years, One-Eye, a mute warrior of supernatural strength, has been held prisoner by the chieftain Barde. Aided by a boy, Are, he kills his captor and together they escape, beginning a journey into the heart of darkness. On their flight from bounty hunters, One-Eye and Are board a Viking vessel for Norway, but the ship is soon engulfed by an endless fog that first disintegrates as they sight an unknown land. As the new land reveals its secrets and the Vikings meet a ghastly fate, One-Eye discovers his true self.

The collaboration between Nicholas Winding Refn and Mads Mikkelsen brought us Bleeder, Pusher, and Pusher II. I can't wait to see what they've come up with this time. I love the story, but I know the two of them will make it more interesting than just what's on the page.

This film has been a long time in coming and I'm sure it will be well worth the wait. I'm glad for the images. Proof that this is really finally happening.

Thanks, Twitch Film, for posting news, photos and video for us Refn and Mads fans in the U.S.! Since it's got a big budget and is in English I'm hoping we won't have to wait two years before we get to see it on screens here.
