First Trailer For Supernatural Kung Fu Film PAINTED SKIN Arrives!

by Todd Brown, August 13, 2008 3:36 AM

Sigh. How long has it been since The Bride With White Hair? Yes, I know there is a numerical response to that question but the correct answer - and the only correct answer - is, of course, too damn long. Horror tinged supernatural kung fu films were once a staple of the Hong Kong industry, a significant genre unto themselves, and a very popular genre unto themselves, but - alas - all good things must come to an end and after an impressive run the stories of demons and wizards battling kung fu masters fell out of favor and the genre was largely abandoned. Until now. We've run quite a lot of coverage of Gordon Chan's upcoming film Painted Skin - starring the legendary Donnie Yen - and with the film arriving in theaters in September the first trailer has finally arrived! Verdict? Tasty in a pleasingly old-school way. I'm sure we'll see more footage in higher quality over the next while but for now you can find this first, English subtitled, trailer below the break in the Twitch Player.

Ooops, I meant Zhao Wei; was thinking of Zhou Xun probably.

Whoops, uploaded the wrong version. It works now. And no, not a fan translation ... this is basically one of the promo sales videos they had in Cannes. Looks much better in better resolution ...

I was doing post-production on a TV show when this was being filmed on a closed set in Hengdian (southern China). All I know about the production was that they had a lot of money (compared to the show I was working on) and it was being edited on set with a macbook pro. I know the boom operator and he said it was a typical hong kong wire-fu film. This story has been made several times I think. I'm not sure how this will turn out but the trailer looked quite...meh.

Mmm... I hope it does look better in better resolution... For now it has a TV series vibe to it... Not that there is anything wrong with TV series but I think it is legitimate to expect better cinematography from a theatrically released movie. I really hope it is THIS video that has quality issue.

It Looks like they've shot the movie in HD. The bride with white hair makes a come back. First we saw her in 'The forbiden Kingdom ,now in this movie.

the music is so ... 80s synth and all. hehehe.

UGH...this is a dud, i'm 99.9% sure. The acting was suspect by all parties involved, the atmosphere nowhere near dark enough for the story being told. Cheap cgi instead of creative makeup. And I had such high hopes for a real HK style film. Sad that I might die never seeing another "real" HK film again.

maybe worth checking out simply for the overwrought sound design.

That music sucked. That looked watchable, but it certainly didn't seem like anything to write home about. That was directed by Gordon Chan? Looks extremely digital and rather cheap.

Diabolical subtitles, bad trailer....it would be a nice surprise if the film is any good.

user-pic

Damn, how disappointing. Hopefully it's the trailer that's bad, not the movie itself.

Wow this is a terrible trailer. Now I realize the Chinese can't match the high-quality trailer production skills of Hollywood, but this is just plain sad. The lazy synth music, the Powerpoint-ish text cards, the lack of epicness. Even an amatuer film student could make a better trailer than this. I just hope that it isn't indicative of the film's quality.

"Now I realize the Chinese can’t match the high-quality trailer production skills of Hollywood"

That was sarcasm....right? I mean, hollywood movies have good trailers? They are usually quite awful.
