While the Icelandic stoner comedy Back Soon hasn't been getting rave reviews (decent) or massive attendance in its native country it has been making some pretty serious waves abroad, as I suspected really.
The film is great IMO, witty, quirky without trying too hard, surreal in places without throwing the otherwise down-to-earth mood off and superbly acted by mostly none actors, especially lead actress Didda Jonsdottir who is nothing short of awesome in this film. But this is the type of film Icelanders have little interest in seeing after being brought up on Hollywood blockbusters since they day they were born. Foreigners have been kinder to it however, giving it the rave reviews it deserves and beating out such powerhouse indies as Choke, Son of Rambow, Brideshead Revisited and Outlander for the Variety Piazza Grande Prize at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland recently. A few hours after the award was received Hollywood called the home office and asked about the remake rights so things are looking far better for this film abroad than it does in its home country which is sad really.
The film will be traveling the film festival circuit so be on the lookout for it.
