Tony Jaa Vows To Complete ONG BAK 2

by Todd Brown, July 30, 2008 10:05 AM

The very strange saga of Tony Jaa and his disappearance from the set of Ong Bak 2 appears to have come to a tearful end. Two months after disappearing from the set of his latest martial arts picture - one which the young Jaa is directing as well as starring in - and after very public mud slinging about finance, not to mention the bizarre reports that Jaa spent the past months in a cave practicing black magic, Jaa appeared on Thai TV yesterday, making his first public appearance since this all began.

Accompanied by his lawyer - an interesting choice, that - Jaa broke down in tears as he denied the black magic rumors and stated his desire to return to the film and complete it as its director. Now, crying in public is really not the sort of thing action stars are supposed to do - can you imagine Stallone breaking down in the middle of an interview? - but in this case I really can't do much but feel bad for Jaa. He was cautioned against directing this project himself by a host of older, more experienced professionals and his refusal to listen was one of the factors that killed Jaa's relationship with Ong Bak director Prachya Pinkaew. Clearly he was just not ready for the day to day challenges of directing a film, particularly not a big budget one - huge budget by Thai standards - in which you are also starring. He's a very sincere man, one very conscious of how he presents both himself and Thai culture in general and this very public humbling has got to be hard for him to swallow ...

I just hope it all works out for him in the end.

I seriously hope he manages to complete the project, he doesn't deserve to endure all this pressure just because he was ambitious and wanted to do a movie that wasn't just him chasing an elephant/statue/whatever with awful editing and insipid direction. Also, it sucks how the press just want to cash, as usual, with something like this by creating cheap tabloid stories. It's refreshing to see an action star that is this sincere and has no regrets of showing this side of his persona infront of the cameras.

i hope he still has something to say in editing and the endproduct. I liked ongbak/tyg but the editing, e.g. was the worst part about those movies. I hope he can retain the energy of the promo reel we all saw here.

Geez, seeing Tony in this train wreck state is really hard to believe. I feel bad for Tony but at the same time, I'm reluctant to feel too sorry for him. I don't mean to sound heartless but wanting to take on the duties of a director in the first place and then when things gets too heavy, he takes off without warning while leaving the production crew hanging - Not cool at all. Its understandable to get frustrated as a director, I'm sure its happens all the time for most people in this position. However, the way he went about his trouble is irresponsible and unprofessional. Hes not doing himself or the movie any favors by delaying the production. With that said, I hope Tony learns from this experience and pull himself together so he can start kicking ass again.

There was more atmosphere in that ONG BAK 2 promo reel than there was in all of TOM YUM GOONG... an unsettling intensity. I was reminded of THE BLADE and APOCALYPSE NOW.
