An important note when choosing which films to see at the Toronto International Film Festival: don't ignore the kids program. Heck, Wallace and Gromit were in there one year and every sees at least one title with serious potential to cross over into all age brackets. And this year that film looks like it could be Krabat. A German teen fantasy film about a youth being taught magic, it would be easy to write this off as a Harry Potter clone except that it looks far, far darker in tone than any of the Potter films have been so far, much more in line with fantasy pictures from the late eighties than anything current, only with much better production values.
We've got the trailer below the break in the Twitch Player. Watch out for the transformation shots in particular, those are fantastic.

Well, the german novel Krabat - The Satanic Mill - was fist published in 1971.

I guess, that doesn't qualify it as a Harry Potter clone.
If Christians are against Harry Potter that promotes witchcraft then they'd lose their minds over this satanic stuff. Looks very good though, I see Good Bye Lenin's Daniel Bruhl is in this one.
Krabat was also a remarkable animated film directed by Karel Zeman in 1976. Not available with english subs, it's still worth searching out the german dvd. I thought I saw some shots in this trailer that looked like an homage to Zeman.

That's where I recognized him from! Good Bye Lenin's great ...
Brühl tends to pop up fairly regularly in American films these days, I think he's even in one of the Bourne movies. And he has a great walk-on role in Julie Delpy's ridiculously underrated "2 Days in Paris"
I think that he was voted as most promising European star after Good Bye Lenin. But the director is Kreuzpaintner i only know him from the movie 'Trade' wich was a so so movie.
Btw, there's a subtitled version of the trailer here:

I'm kind of worried about this. The book (one of my favorites) has a mythical quality to it. Kind of like Neil Gaiman's Sandman. I don't see much of that in the trailer but time will tell.
FINALLY!!!! I'm so happy right now!!! I was waiting for this for the last 15 years, hoping it woul happen sooner or later. The Book is a classic.
