Takeshi Kitano's ACHILLES AND THE TORTOISE Arrives In Trailer Form!

by Todd Brown, June 25, 2008 9:07 AM

Yes, the much loved director has been a wee bit self absorbed of late and, no, this is not a return to the gangster films where he made his name. Far from it. In fact, Achilles And The Tortoise (Akiresu) may just be the traditional Japanese drama that Kitano has been threatening to make for years now. He casts himself in this one as a failed painter - and uses his own paintings throughout - which sounds on the surface as though it could be a continuation of the sort of stuff he did in both Takeshis and Glory To The Filmmaker but the trailer makes it very clear that this one couldn't be any more different from those films. Check it out in the Twitch Player below the break.

glory to the filmmaker was utter shit, and this looks awful as well. just like some fuckin TV drama.

don´t know, maybe he really got involved with this one. He is a painter also after all, so most probably all this paintings as well as the Hana Bi ones are his. Sigh... I´ll take the risk again but I´m really afraid.

I don't know what to think, literally don't know what to think. But regardless, I'll still see it, I thought Takeshis' had some decent moments but overall wasn't up to par with his early movies, likewise Glory to the Filmmaker.

It's always a pleasant experience watching Kanako Higuchi and I didn't even bother to watch Glory so Kitano is still fine in my eyes...I'm in for this one.

I think the original Kitano was kidnapped by aliens around 2003, and they left a crappy replacement in his place.
