Yes, the much loved director has been a wee bit self absorbed of late and, no, this is not a return to the gangster films where he made his name. Far from it. In fact, Achilles And The Tortoise (Akiresu) may just be the traditional Japanese drama that Kitano has been threatening to make for years now. He casts himself in this one as a failed painter - and uses his own paintings throughout - which sounds on the surface as though it could be a continuation of the sort of stuff he did in both Takeshis and Glory To The Filmmaker but the trailer makes it very clear that this one couldn't be any more different from those films.
