Imagi Animation Studios has announced the full voice cast line-up for Astro Boy, the upcoming CG-animated motion picture adapted from Osamu Tezuka’s classic manga Tetsuwan Atom. As you may recall from our previous report, the title role of Astro Boy has already been filled by Freddie Highmore. Joining him in this iconic sci-fi superhero animation is Nicolas Cage, Donald Sutherland, Nathan Lane, Bill Nighy and Eugene Levy. Here’s the updated synopsis that differs from the "an alien race threatens Earth" version ever since the director chair has been shifted from Colin Brady (Everyone's Hero) to David Bowers (Flushed Away):
Set in futuristic Metro City, IMAGI Studios' Astro Boy is about a young robot with incredible powers created by a brilliant scientist to replace the son he has lost. Unable to fulfill the grieving father's expectations, our hero embarks on a journey in search of acceptance, experiencing betrayal and a netherworld of robot gladiators, before he returns to save Metro City and reconcile with the man who had rejected him.
It's worth noting that Summit Entertainment holds the distribution rights while there is no mention of the Weinstein company. Astro Boy is slated for theatrical release in 2009.
