I think we're getting to the point now where it's safe to say that a major trend within new Russian film is the historical action picture. Going far back into the past there is the likes of 1612 and Mongol, throw in a fantasy element and you've got Wolfhound, move a little closer to th present and you've got Save the Emperor and others. The latest to enter the fray is of the far past, swords and armor variety. Titled Aleksandr it's an impressive visual piece of work, the attention to detail is very nice and the action sequences look impressive. Cool costumes but those extras fight like crap.
Looks like polish historical movie... cheap and pompous... he-he...
Yeah it does look cheap and the wide shots of the crowd battles leave something to be desired.
On the other hand there's a few nice shots in there with some atmosphere and it's not a widely covered period for the region in film (at least that I know about)
Hehe, you guys weren't kidding about the fight scenes at all. Some of the extras look like they're either underwater or in slow motion.
Funny to see, though a little sad, as the film appears to have some genuine ambition behind it, taking itself very seriously. I don't speak the language though, so maybe the dialog lifts it up another notch?
