Well, it's not just Lost In Beijing being hurt by China's morality police after all. Reports surfaced in China yesterday that Lust, Caution star Tang Wei is being banned from Chinese media because of the sexual nature of her performance in Ang Lee's Lust, Caution. Yes, kids, the SARFT are now batting two for two. What does this mean? Not only is Tang effectively black listed from future work but a notice has apparently been sent out requiring Chinese awards shows to remove any references to the film and mentions of the film and Tang are being forcibly removed from Chinese websites.
Woah, and this one the eve of the Asian Film Awards in Hong Kong, for which Lust, Caution is nominated for.... just about everything; and looking to sweep the statuettes. There goes our conspiracy theories as to why Lou Ye and Li Yu suffered in the darkness while Ang Lee stood unmolested in the spotlight. At least they're aspiring to a consistent totalitarianism.
This seems a mighty drastic move given the money and international recognition this film has pulled, and given how money routinely trumps ideology in this country. Maybe if Ang Lee weren't Taiwanese he might have pulled this off.
