Hong Kong Filmart Day One

A quick update here from the floor of the Hong Kong Filmart where there's loads of good stuff to peruse ...

First up, while they're not showing any footage just yet the first two promo images from upcoming supernatural kung fu film Painted Skin are gracing the floor in huge, oversized glory. And they are, as you may surmise from that, absolutely glorious. This thing's looking good, though I'm still a little bit nervous about the crew shake up that saw director Wilson Yip essentially squeezed out of his own project and replaced by Gordon Chan. Still, it may well be a good thing to see Donnie Yen working with someone else for a change.

Also gorgeous: the new character posters for John Woo's Battle Of Red Cliff, which are plastered down the side of the Mei Ah booth, which is bizarrely devoid of any sort of materials for anybody to take home with them. Nothing there but corporate profiles. Weird. They did, however, have their big press conference today, at which they paraded out a host of major Hong Kong stars - Shawn Yue, Louis Koo, and Nic Tse among them - and showed footage from a bunch of their current project. Keep and eye out for The Moss and Button Man, both look like they could be very good indeed.

Also also gorgeous? The new poster for Kim Ki-Duk's Dream which is apparently already done shooting - man, that guy works fast - and into post production. Expect the dream sequences to be CGI enhanced.

Also very good? Geisha Vs Ninjas, a new one from Death Trance action choreographer Go Ohara. Well, the premise is good, anyway, no idea if the film is but I'm going to check and see if they've got a trailer or something tomorrow.

And in the so ridiculous it's sublime category: the director of Opapatika is preparing his next film, titled Fireball and while it's not in production just yet the team behind it has prepared a lengthy demo reel to show off the concept and stunt performers. The premise? Full contact, no holds barred, muay thai basketball. In a sensible world this would be so ridiculous as to be unwatchable but our world has never been sensible in the entire history of ever and so this thing looks bloody well fantastic.

I'm always on the lookout for work from the Kitamura, Yuji Shimomura and now Go Ohara camp. Thanks for the updated Todd!

What are the required credentials for attending these screenings? What constitutes being in the "trade"?
