Weinstein Watch: Prachya Pinkaew's CHOCOLATE

by Kurt Halfyard, February 10, 2008 1:47 AM

After a very successful opening this weekend in Thailand (trouncing Stephen Chow's CJ7), much anticipated girl-action flick Chocolate, from director Prachya Pinkaew has been snapped up by The Weinstein Company for North American distribution. Now Ong Bak and Tom Yum Goong were both severely hacked and cut and re-soundtracked by Luc Besson and TWC respectively; how do you think this is going to fare with Chocolate? Oh yea, and here comes the "Quentin Tarantino Presents:" you can bet good money on that. All gripes aside, it's good to see some Thai goodness get a (hopefully) relatively speedy release without the presence of a global star along the likes of Tony Jaa.

No international release dates set although the rights have sold in the U.K., S. Korea, Hong Kong and other places according to Screen.com.

The English friendly trailer that surfaced last month is in the Twitch Video Player and embedded after the jump.

Let's start betting how stupid the renaming of the film is going to be, no doubt in order to prevent people from confusing this with that Johnny Depp film. Here are some choices:

"Lady Dragon"

"Hell to Pay"

"Mrs Ong Bak"

"The Fighting Spirit"

"Deadly Revenge"

"Chocolate Dragon"

"Legend of The Chocolate Fist"

"Lady Protector"
