"NATTEVAGTEN" finally gets a decent DVD-release with English subs!

How's this for coincidence. A few days after posting news about Danish director Ole Bornedal's new movie, UK distributor Metrodome announces a DVD release of the movie which made him famous: the serial killer thriller "Nattevagten".

The region 2 release will be in English shops on March the 17th, and will feature the original Danish soundtrack with English subs.
Ill-advisedly, it will be titled "Nightwatch".

Ouch. This is very unfortunate.

Not only is there already a well-known Russian fantasy-epic out with the same name, but two years after the original was released Bornedal remade his own movie for the English-speaking market. Guess what: that version is ALSO called "Nightwatch".
It starred Ewan McGregor and Brad Dourif and is easily available on DVD, but make no mistake: it's far inferior to the older Danish one which stars Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.

But confusing title or not, the DVD which Metrodome releases in a few weeks (with the cover art shown here) is the brilliant original, not the lackluster remake.

Rejoice! I've been itching to own this ever since I saw it on television a few years back...

Anchor Bay released a disc a few years ago.

isn't the Anchor Bay one OOP?

I think it is OOP. Going for a decent sum on Amazon right now. I passed over this release in a bargin bin at Wal-Mart(!) a few years back. Still steamed at myself for it.

Great film! I think it`s suspenseful.

The old Anchor Bay disc is anamorphic. Yes, it is OOP. One sold on ebay the other day for $33.

The remake was the one that was non-anamorphic on a Miramax disc here in the US.

Thanks for the correction, dullboy, could have sworn it was the other way round.
See? It's confusing!

Since I got the pretty decent R1 Anchor Bay disc already years ago (hey hey hey), I am more awaiting an acceptable dvd release for another Skandivanian thriller "Mørkets øy"(1997) (aka 'Isle of Darkness'). Though nowhere near as masterfull as 'Nattevagten' it does again star the ever charming Sofie Gråbøl.
So far, I have only heard of German dubbed (Insel der Dunkelheid) and French dubbed (Une porte vers l'enfer) releases ...
