Minoru Kawasaki Reviving GUILALA!

by Todd Brown, February 2, 2008 7:06 AM

Well what do you know ... Minoru Kawasaki is going legit. The merry prankster of Japanese film, Kawasaki has built a reputation among cult film fans for his ultra low budget creature films that typically dress actors up in giant animal costumes and drop them into the middle of - usually - some sports related scenario or other. Among his 'hits' are Calamari Wrestler (a squid professional wrestling), Kani Goalkeeper (a crab playing soccer), Kabuto-o Beetle (a beetle boxing) and Executive Koala (an exception from the sports rule, featuring a giant bunny working for a food import company). Fresh off the surprise success of his disaster movie spoof Everything But Japan Sinks Kawasaki has just agreed to direct the big screen return of giant monster Guilala for Japan's Shochiku Films. Hardly one of the heavy hitters in the giant monster world Guilala appeared in 1967's The X From Outer Space and will be returning to the screen this fall in Guilala's Counter Attack: The Touyaku Summit One-Shot Crisis. One things for certain ... with Kawasaki at the helm you can expect this to favor men in suits over CGI ...

I absolutely LOVE the original!!I'm so excited about this new one.I've always thought that this kaiju really summed-up Japan's wacky sci-fi image perfectly.
