First Proper Teaser For Mamoru Oshii's SKY CRAWLERS!

Well, glory be. I am an absolute, unabashed fan of Japanese film maker and animation genius Mamoru Oshii. He is, after all, the man behind Ghost in the Shell, Patlabor, Avalon, Jin Roh and more and is very well deserving of a place in the absolute upper reaches of the global film hierarchy. He's just really, really good. Since his last proper narrative feature, the second Ghost in the Shell picture Innocence, Oshii has produced an immersive art installation and a feature film that was essentially an extensive in-joke among peers to blow of steam - and muck about with one very cool new animation technique - following the intensely philosophic work of Innocence but he's back to more straight forward story telling now with Sky Crawlers, an adaptation of the five novel series by Hiroshi Mori.

Oshii has promised to set his normal messages and philosophical concerns to the side here to focus on telling a more accessible story, one driven by a romance at its core, and is also moving more deeply into the world of 3D animation with this feature than he ever has before. All I want to know, really, is what it's going to look like and, to that end, have been visiting the official website at least a couple times a week for the past few months. And today I was rewarded. There's a new sixty second teaser available. The buffer times at the official site were lagging badly when I tried to view it there so I have since captured it and you'll find it embedded in the Twitch Player below the break. You're welcome.

WOW. Nice stuff. Thanks Todd!

I have to say, I'm glad Oshii is ditching the usual psycho-mumbo-Jumbo on this one. It was really tiring in Innocence, almost to the point of unbearable for me. I like psycho-babble as much as the next guy, but when it is overwhelming the story, and compromising the enjoyment, then to me it loses the battle.

But this looks even better than Innocence. I'm glad to see the CG stuff integrating better with the cel shaded characters. It's very pretty.

YAY!

Any lucid Oshii film is a treat for your brain and your soul, the man is one of the few I'd dare call "genius".

As for the less-lucid Oshii films: they just exist to show how undeserving of his lucid films we are! :cheese:

I haven't got a clue what to anticipate with this project, but oh man am I stoked to see it!!!
And during their yearly talk he'll probably be asking Hayao Miyazaki: "How did you like them flying scenes?".

The colour palette reminds me of Last Exile... which is rad, because it looks like he's going to top that animation-wise. From the ambiguity of the narrator's monologue, I'd guess that the themes will still be recognisably Oshii. Which is also rad, I think.

Yeah, I'm with you, GAPS. I'm hoping this hits the same balance of story, character and themes as Oshii did with Jin Roh. Yes, I know he only wrote that and has said he'd have focused less on the relationship if he'd directed it himself but I still think it's one of the most enduring things he's ever been involved with and I hope he learned from seeing how it evolved ...
