It has taken a long time for director Soi Cheang's follow up to the ultra bleak Dog Bite Dog to make it to theaters but with releases imminent in both Japan and Hong Kong - the film is a co-production of the two nations and features a mixed cast - the PR machine is slowly beginning to ramp up. A lengthyHong Kong trailer surfaced a while back and has now been joined by a fresh Japanese teaser. The film is an adaptation of the popular manga of the same name, telling the story of a young man - played by Hong Kong star Shawn Yue - imprisoned for the murder of his parents. Through horrible abuse in prison and the mentoring of an old martial arts expert the young man learns to protect himself and becomes a pit fighter upon release. I caught a market screening of this a good while back and felt that the film - in that form,at least, given the amount of time that's passed I expect it may well have been re-edited since I saw it - was ultimately let down by a weak script but it positively oozes style, Shawn Yue is a charismatic lead, the support cast features the always strong Frances Ng, and fight fans will find plenty to like. Both trailer are embedded in the Twitch Player below the break.
