Which would be an excellent move, though I'm still not at all clear on what the second film is actually supposed to be ...
Between this, a new Tsukamoto film, and the potential bounce-back of Parnassus, this has been a very positive day for early-days rumours. Rad.

I hope he does it. Don't know where he'll put in the insects and clock gears but he's the best choice after Jackson.
Damn, I'd forgotten he'd been planning on trying "At the Mountains of Madness" at some point. I'm with Tuan Jim on this. Screw The Hobbit, somebody give the man just enough money to get some good Lovecraft made.
Let him do the Hobbit with real people in costumes. As much practical effects as possible.

Pan is overrated for sure, but Del Toro has actually done good stuff. Watch Cronos to see what the guy is capable of.

As much as I'd love to see a Del Toro Gollum of old... I've already seen Gollum. What I haven't seen is more from the tomes of illustrated notes that Del Toro funnels his grand and sticky imagination into, and from which came Pan's Labyrinth.
Tolkien as filtered through Del Toro sounds great, but I'd much rather see Del Toro realising Del Toro.
By making The Hobbit Del Toro might get the cloud to make At the Mountains of Madness.
