With their first person perspective zombie picture [REC] winning raves everywhere it is seen, Spanish directors Paco Plaza and Jaume Balaguero are the current darlings of the Spanish genre scene and both are striking while interest is hot with a pair of new projects. Coming from Plaza is an English language feature titled Circus about a family crossing the Nevada desert forced to take shelter with a rogue collection of circus performers when their car breaks down. Less is known about Balaguero's project, titled The Number Thirteen Lady, about a professor and student drawn into a fantasy world guided by evil powers. Both Balaguero and Plaza have somewhat spotty records but both are capable of very good work and it's good to see them at new projects so soon ...

THE NUMBER 13 LADY sounds really weird. A world where poetry is a weapon?! This might be tough to pull off but I'm a hundred times more interested in Balaguero doing something off the wall like this than slumming it with yet another flick about twitching ghosts. The dude has talent but I have yet to see a feature from him that delivers on what his early short films promised.
