KARAOKE TERROR Finally Hits DVD In April!

by Todd Brown, December 18, 2007 1:33 PM

It does my heart good to announce this: Shinohara Tetsuo's adaptation of Murakami Ryu's Karaoke Terror - released in Japan way back in 2003 as The Complete Japanese Shouwa Songbook - is finally going to be hitting English subtitled DVD on April 28th, 2008. I caught this back in April of 2005 when it played at the Philadelphia International Film Festival - you'll find my thoughts here - and have been waiting for it to hit DVD ever since. Based on a novel by Ryu Murakami of Coin Locker Babies and Audition fame the film stars Ryuhei Matsuda as the leader of a group of young men connected only by their shared love of karaoke who are drawn into a violent, bloody war of retribution with a group of similarly karaoke obsessed middle aged women. It's very silly, very bloody and immensely quotable. And it also features liner notes by Midnight Eye's Nick Rucka.

Sadly, there doesn't seem to be a proper trailer available for the film available online but there is, however, an extended karaoke number which you'll find embedded below the break in the Twitch Video Player.

I'd much prefer reading Ryu Murakami's source novel in an English translation but I'll settle for this adaptation for now.
