The North American DVD Of Aron Gauder's THE DISTRICT Is Finally Here!

by Todd Brown, November 29, 2007 7:11 AM

Okay, so it wont be available in shops until January 15th - the Amazon listing is incorrect - but I've got a copy here in my grubby little hands right now and it's fantastic. Aron Gauder's The District became an instant favorite around these parts the day we saw the first trailers online, that promise was more than borne out when we caught the film at the 2005 Toronto International Film Festival and with it's racially charged Romeo and Juliet scenario, coarse humor, hip hop spouting hookers, time travelling dinosaur death and a hysterical cameo from George W Bush it seemed a sure thing that we'd be getting this one on local shores in no time. But that was not to be until Montreal's Atopia Pictures finally picked up rights earlier this year and give the film a brief limited theatrical run where it won fantastic critical response. And now you can finally bring it home. The transfer of the Atopia release is fantastic - anamorphic and perfectly clean - and it includes an excellent half hour behind the scenes doc and a four minute clip from the original District shorts aired on Hungarian TV. Don't take my word on the quality, though, there is a gallery of screen captures linked below.

Not to rain on everyone's parades.. But apparently this has been delayed until 1/15/08 according to the US distributor, Caroline. :(

That was actually Atopia's decision as a couple really big titles are hitting on the original December date and they were afraid of getting squished. The Jan date is definitely solid, though. The discs are out of manufacturing and sitting in the warehouse ready to ship ... the one I've got is the full, commercial release.
