They really don't make a lot of sex comedies in Asia - they're a rarity across the entire continent - so it came as some surprise that the original Sex Is Zero was as good as it turned out to be. The original Korean college sex comedy managed the difficult task of being raunchy, funny, sexy and emotionally sincere all at the same time - a juggling act that many more experienced hands aren't able to manage. It's no surprise that the producers gave the green light to a sequel and while lengthy delays - it's been a few years now - can often mean problems behind the scenes, the indications on this one is that all the principals were simply taking their time to make sure they got it right the second time out, too. The film's first trailer has just arrived and it looks like the wait was worth it. Much of the original cast returns and the trademark blend of skin, comedy and pathos looks to be fully intact ...
I loved the first half of Sex is Zero. After that it became an overwrought after school special on the dangers of college pregnancy. If this second film is as giid as the first's first half, I'll be more than pleased.
SEX IS ZERO is more like the Korean LAST AMERICAN VIRGIN than anything else. Unfortunately, while the sucker-punch ending of LAST AMERICAN VIRGIN haunts me to this day, SEX IS ZERO doesn't quite have the stones to end on that kind of bleak note, and thus we get a horrible aerobics competition that I barely made it all the way through. Still, the original SEX IS ZERO was good enough, though it had room for improvement - I am curious to see what part 2 will be like.
