Jay Chou's Got A KUNG FU DUNK

by Todd Brown, November 25, 2007 11:11 PM

You know, this recent surge in martial arts sports films has me a little bit baffled. If it was going to happen you'd have expected it to happen on the heels of Shaolin Soccer but things were quiet on the knock-off front back then while here we are years later with a quasi-official Soccer sequel coming soon in Shaolin Girl and Hong Kong officially getting back into the martial arts sports game with Kung Fu Dunk. Jay Chou stars and while I've never been a fan I've got to admit the teaser's got something going on ... you'll find it embedded below the break.

apparently this is the live action version of the Slam Dunk manga

That's what I thought too, but this doesn't look anything like Slam Dunk any more. Slam Dunk was more 'realistic' (relatively speaking) but this looks over the top like Shaolin Soccer, Kung-Fu Hustle, etc.

Wow, this looks awful.

But I thought Jay Chou was in the live-action Slam Dunk? Why would he be in two rival basketball films at the same time? Though you seem to have acknowledged that confusion already. All I can think of is that they were /going/ to make a live-action Slam Dunk, but there proved to be some problems with licenseing and it ended up being an original story instead.

Defintely worth noting: KUNG FU DUNK director "Kevin Chu" is better known to the likes of Twitch readers as the legendary Chu Yen-Ping. Jay Chou's big basketball movie is in the hands of the director of SHAOLIN POPEY, SLAVE OF THE SWORD, and FANTASY MISSION FORCE. Make of that what you will. I know I'm more interested in KUNG FU DUNK now that I know its true lineage. All of a sudden it all makes perfect sense.
