13 BELOVED Director Returns!

by Todd Brown, November 18, 2007 2:18 AM

We don't cover a lot of romantic dramas around here for the very simple reason that most of them are sickly sweet in a way that makes me want to be forcibly ill after, of course, clawing my eyes out of my face. But we're not entirely without emotion and there are times when we make an exception. This is one of those times.

Love of Siam is the sophomore directorial effort by Chukiat Sakweerakul, the young maestro behind the fantastic 13 Beloved - a film that the Weinstein Company smartly snapped up because it's really damn good and not so smartly (not in my books, anyway, though it probably makes business sense) are burying so that nobody can see the original before they remake it. The move from sharp edged, bitingly satiric and rather bloody thriller to a pure romance is a bit of a surprising one for Sakweerakul but I'm more than a little curious to see what he can do with it and confident the results will be good. Why? The man's a ferociously talented writer with a good grasp of character and he's got some serious skills behind the camera. These are things that bode just as well for drama as thriller. Plus, you can throw in the fact that they very lengthy trailer now on the film's official website is chock full of beautiful imagery. Very nice.
