Good news everyone!
SCI FI Channel has green lit a third season of its most-watched Original Series Eureka, ordering 13 new hours of the dramedy. Eureka will begin production on a third season in Vancouver early next year for a summer 2008 premiere. "Eureka rose to an even higher creative level in its sophomore season, combining entertaining, compelling stories with deeper character development and great cast chemistry. And clearly the audience noticed, bringing millions of new viewers to the Channel," said Mark Stern. Returning for a third season are stars Colin Ferguson, Salli Richardson, Joe Morton, Jordan Hinson and Ed Quinn.
I don’t know if it is worth noting that other stars of the show Erica Cerra, Neil Grayston or Matt Frewer are not mentioned in the release? But Eureka has been one of my favorite shows to watch over the summer and I am anxious to see how the season ends next Friday.
Tonight is the start of the fourth season of Stargate: Atlantis. I’ve had the fortune to preview the first two episodes of the series: Adrift and Lifeline. But, it proves to be difficult to review a series that I have given no prior attention to. But spurned on by the lovely promotional packaging and a sense of responsibility to all of you who e-mailed me about the Save Carson Beckett campaign after the Digital Media Press Tour in June I will give you my thoughts on the two episodes. When I find out who gave you lot my e-mail I am going to give them such a kicking!
So I have a slight sense about what happened at the end of last season. The Asurans attacked Atlantis with a beam weapon fired through a satellite. Atlantis tries to escape into space and finale ended with the hyperdrive malfunctioning, leaving the city flying through uncharted space with a day's worth of energy left in their sole ZPM and Dr Weir critically injured. How am I doing so far? Introduce the new Chief of Medicine Dr. Jennifer Keller, played by Jewel Staite from Firefly fame, who tries to keep Weir alive. Dr. McKay tries to get Atlantis up and running before they all die and Lt. Colonel John Sheppard looks serious all the time and speaks gruffly. Samantha Carter, from SG-1 [duh], as we know has been touted by the network as the next commander of Atlantis. She in slowly introduced into this show as she spends the better part of these two episodes trying to find Atlantis as it floats through space.
Having watched both episodes I don’t know what I can tell you or what would be considered spoilers, since fans are obviously a ravenous lot. From a production standpoint you definitely can tell where the money in Sci Fi is going. The show looks great as do the effects. There is a significant difference between the look of this show and say, Flash Gordon, will noticeably has a much smaller effects budget. For me it was more fun watching the episodes and seeing the different sets that we visited while on the tour and how they’ve been used in production. If I can tell you anything about the outcome of the two episodes is that Samantha Carter will not have assumed command of Atlantis yet but that door is opened. Other character storylines are left open and will likely pop up later in the season to add dramatic tension. What else is there to say? Stargate Atlantis seems to be good sci-fi adventure and fun. But you’re the fans. You watch the episodes and then get back to me and tell me what you think.
You’ve got my e-mail apparently.
