Not much change from last week's rankings but "Harry Potter & The Order of the Phoenix" did retake the top spot again from "Ocean's 13". New entry "Vexille" bearly made the Top Ten list while "Pokemon" continued to post strong numbers.

Movies in release this week in Japan include Quentin Tarantino's "Death Proof" (split from "Grindhouse"), Michael Moore's "Sicko" and John Cameron Mitchell's "Shortbus". Also in limited release are Shinjou Takehiko's "Tengoku De Kimi Ni Aetara" and J.P. Schaefer's "Chapter 27".

Was Vexille a limited release? Otherwise this must be pretty disappointing...

Looks like a wide release to me. I saw Appleseed opening weekend in Japan and I wouldn't call the theater packed. I'm sure they'll make their money back on DVD.

Vexille opened on 185 screens -- a low-to-medium-sized release. Per screen average was not strong.

And Death Proof isn't released until Sept. 1 here (and Planet Terror on Sept. 22). One cinema in Tokyo (Roppongi Hills) and one in Osaka are playing the original Grindhouse (with trailers) for 3000 yen admission. Tarantino delivers a little message to Japanese audiences about it here (click on the link at the right, in the white strip):
