Quick! Someone Smack Whoever Titled This! Hard!

by Todd Brown, August 21, 2007 11:37 PM

Okay. It's a new, Hollywood produced blockbuster with a budget in the thirty million range. You can do good things for thirty mil. The cast includes Zhang Ziyi and The Duelist's Jang Dong-Gun, both of whom we like. There's a fighting chance that it's the Seven Samurai remake people have been talking about which I'm personally a bit iffy on, but hey - why not? The casting call apparently demands a black midget with a tendency to grab his enemies by the testicles, which seems more than a bit out of keeping with the tone of things if this IS the Seven Samurai remake but, well, it's been funny before. The title? Laundry Warrior.

Good God.

I don't see what you're worried about, Todd. This sounds like Oscar-worthy stuff.

these are two separate projects; LAUNDRY WARRIOR is not the Seven Samurai remake.

Big fan of Jang Dong-Gun, but I don't remember him being in the Duelist...

Perhaps "racist" is too strong of a term. I suppose "ignorant of the offensiveness of the content" (good lord) would probably be more suited for this situation. I don't particularly feel very strongly about it, but having volunteered in a social justice group for a few years, makes me more sensitive to these things than the average public. I think having a "black little person" to play a crotch grabbing joke character called 8-ball is really pushing towards racism. The rest of the characters seem to step way over the line of good taste, in my opinion.

Brilliant. You're supposed to call a dwarf a "little person" and they forget to call black a "person of color". Which, to my utter astonishment, is actually a legal term in the States.
