
I've just written my thoughts on David Birnbaum's Found Objects in today's TIFF Short Film Roundup but this one is so strong that it deserves a post of its own.
Set in a future-past world crumbling and wracked by perpetual war, frantic preparations for a music recital are underway in a disintegrating theatre building. With the aftershocks of the bombing becoming more frequent, only one thing holds the structure together – the unwavering determination of a forgotten old man in the cellar beneath the janitor’s apartment. With the inhabitants oblivious to the imminent danger, the future is left in the hands of the desperate young performers. But will this be enough to protect them all from catastrophe?
A fan of early Jeunet? You may have just found your new favorite film maker. Yup. Production design and cinematography are lush, the imagery perplexing and entirely compelling. Just go.
