While the Christmas shopping season isn't nearly the big deal in Asia that it is here it seems that there are, nonetheless, always a good number of significant titles releasing around this time of year and this year is no different. Here's some of what's coming:
Brave Story
The November release of this hotly anticipated animation from Gonzo Digimation was announced a couple weeks back and all three versions are now available for pre-order on YesAsia and all include English subtitles. There's the single disc Limited Edition, the mid-price two disc Special Edition and the ultra limited pressing four disc Collectors Box. If you have to ask what that last one costs you can't afford it.

Hal and Bons
Not only are the nine new episodes of Katsuhito Ishii's CG animated dogs hitting DVD soon but the original four episodes, previously available only spread across the Grasshoppa Digital Magazine DVD releases, are also getting a release of their own. While YesAsia haven't listed subtitle details for these yet it's been confirmed elsewhere that these will indeed be English subtitled.

And this seems as good a time as any to point out that Ishii's latest live action oddity - and I mean that in the best possible way, I adore this film - Nice No Mori: The First Contact (AKA Funky Forest) gets an English subtitled release October 27th. You can pre-order that here. And then come see it at Toronto After Dark.
Woman On The Beach
The latest by Korean auteur Hong Sang Soo drew very positive reactions at the just completed TIFF and is due to hit DVD October 31st. Hong fans need no encouragement.

The Duke of Mount Deer
TVB continues to excavate their vaults with the latest in their line of restored and subtitled DVD releases going to the classic TV show The Duke of Mount Deer, an epic martial arts soap opera that marked the first ever collaboration between actors Andy Lau and Tony Leung. Though not as well known as the Condor Heroes shows people I know who have seen them all say that this is the best of them.

Plenty of other good things coming soon that we've already mentioned - Kore-Eda's fantastic HANA and the gritty Dog Bite Dog both leap to mind - but those are the big recent announcements ...
