Sub-title for the film this time is 'A Chain of Short Memories About Their Distance', but the larger title given seems to translate to '5 Centimetres Per Second'...

I noticed this one last night, didn't quite realise what it was, then the Anime News Network coverage clarifies it - here's the trailer for the new film from 'Place Promised...' and 'Voices of a Distant Star' Uber-Director Makoto Shinkai.

Lovely looking, very colorful, vibrant, fresh and emotive animation. Splits people, which is nice, between those that struggle to cope with the idea of the huge use of computer technology and photographic manipulation (hey, all artists use 'tricks' and 'tools' - always have done) and those that simply sit back and take in the result (their victory, I think) ... there's a downloadable trailer in the Official Yahoo site that has opened up, the films not due until Spring 2007, and is a collection of short stories apparently. I translated a little blurb about the film for Active Anime:
Upon graduating from elementary school, Tono Takaki and Shinohara Akari drifted apart. Despite the special feelings that existed between them, the only thing that persisted was time.

Then one day, in the middle of a snowstorm, Takaki finally went to meet Akari...
A cycle of three animated works: “Okasho”, depicting the day of Takaki and Akari’s reunion; “Kosumonauto (Cosmonaut), which picks up after their meeting and shows Takaki as seen by another person; and “Byosoku 5 Senchimetoru” (5cm Per Second), which captures the wayward journey of their souls.

http://www.the-triad.org/ also has a fansubbed version of the HD trailer on bittorrent; not that there's much to subtitle in that clip.
I'm looking forward to this. The fact that there are three stories but they still connect to each other seems interesting.
Shinkai had problems with pacing in his last film, which was also his first full length feature, obviously he wasn't quite accustomed to the length of such a film. Separating the larger picture into smaller parts is probably a very smart move on his part.

Personally, where Shinkai is concerned, I prefer shorter works rather than full length films. Short films just suit the director a lot better, concidering the overall theme of all his works is very much in vein of short stories - even with his last film, which however was a full length effort.
