Chow Yun-Fat is a pirate and China has a problem

Well I've just come back from watching Dead Man's Chest so I thought I would share a bit of news with you about the impending sequel, the current film and China.

So first of all that's Chow Yun-Fat [Der!!!] in costume. No idea who the saucy wench is. Yar!!! Not bad though. He looks good. But POTC3 may be a bit overladened with characters [when you've seen the end of the second film you will understand]. Screen time will be scarce if the writers plan to carry all the characters through to the end.

Oh China. That has to be one of the toughest markets to get a film into for the sole reason that there is no ratings system. No ratings system means that all movies that are shown in China have to be suitable for EVERYONE. Wow. While I want to be respectful I have to admit I think that's a load. And so POTC2 joins the long list of films that will have to undergo edits if they are to pass by the censors and be shown in China. The authority has concluded that the supernatural element and Capitan Davy Jones' octopus beard are not suitable for the underaged. Coming from a nation that eats octopus? Wow. Perhaps someone watched some Japanese Hentai prior to the screening and couldn't stop thinking of the beard that nothing but a phalic symbol. A big hairy phalic symbol.

I'll stop now.

Oh. Was anyone else thinking Empire Strikes Back after you watched the end of Dead Man's Chest? Anyone? Nope? Just me?

You're not alone on the whole ESB vibe. Lots of people thought so as well, heh heh.

What floors me is that people have criticized the movie for not having an ending? Um, hello... it's a cliffhanger, for crying out loud. The film's last shot might have made me more excited than any shot I've seen in a Hollywood movie all year long, and non-ending be damned, I can't wait for the third film.

All this time we have known that there would be a third film. I'm with you Jason. It makes me wish for days when our parents would listen and watch serials with a cliffhanger every week. Open endings just don't fly with a north american crowd. Damn their eyes. And technically? Wow. I didn't much believe Jones' goons but the phalic beard? Where did it begin and end with prostetic [tee hee] and cg? Nicely done. This movie was just pure joy. Absolute fun and adventure. Just what I needed on a day off from the shop. Huzzah.

I enjoyed the Empire vibe and the final shot made me giddy. Other than length, (it was a bit long) I'm stunned with the critics panning this film. Makes no sense to me.

Critics are idiots. They jump on the band wagon with all sorts of films to give them shit or praise them. Especially in the last few years I have noticed critics making a fuss about some movies and panning some movies out because it is the 'in' thing to do. That is what it seems like anyway. You see all those reviews where they don't actually explain their reasoning for panning out a movie or praising it or they say exactly the same thing (EXACTLY) as all the other critics. No respect for those people.

Anyways POTC2 was good but I didn't think it was as good as the first. And yes the next film is going to be a bit of a mess with so many actors, will be interesting to see how to work that out.

They could just take out Orlando Bloom and Kiera Knightly? It wouldn't take much away from the film :P

I want Kiera Knightly on my face.

My only major complaint with the film is a matter of motiviation. The characters seems to always meander from their goals (we need 99 men ... oh wait! No we don't. Then why are we here?) The characters also seem to get more characturized then developed. I'm think of the three man sword duel, Knightly pouting on the sidelines. The ending does harken towards ESB but it doesn't have the emotional pull or fun leaving me only thinking of Marketing dollars. The Matrix sequel had a similar problem of giving you all the information you needed at the end of the movie rather than using that info as the base of the film. ESB was constantly feeding you new plot developments until its finale hit you with a loaded twist that added to everything that had come before it. I complain way to much. Davy Jones looks amazing. We need more Davy Jones. But did anyone notice how the whole film centers on Sparrow escaping Davy Jones curse yet the fear of such punishment never really was noticeable.

Just got back from the movie. While I don't agree with methosb on the fact that it wasn't as good as the first (I thought it was a little better), I do agree with him on critics. That bandwagon crap gets on my nerves. If these critics liked the first one, I can't imagine why they wouldn't like this one.
