Nice little surprise, right at the end of the week where Takahata's relatively recent 'Pom Poko' and 'My Neighbours the Yamadas' get a USA release on disc - Optimum Home Entertainment have revealed that 'Hols, Prince of the Sun', the first Directorial piece by Isao Takahata from way back in 1968, will get its first ever DVD release with English Subtitles very soon. Hayao Miyazaki was the key animator on the project too, and it's sometimes refered to also as 'Horus' or 'Little Norse Prince' if you want to go looking into it a little more.

One of many non-Ghibli project that Takahata / Miyazaki were involved in, Toei Studio's piece was very different to other anime in its tone. The film was a financial flop, and Takahata's services were no longer required by the Studio as a result. No sign of either artwork of specifications yet, but hoping this will be a great release of a gem of a movie.

Surprisingly, Toei still manages to mention the film on its Japanese Site.

I really love that movie. The story might not be as good as the ones of Takahata's later works, but still it's a very lovely movie.

I saw this film dubbed into English at a cinema back in the mid-1970s when I was in primary school. It's big and epic and mythical. That I still remember it says something.
