Twitch Goes Christmas Shopping ...

Okay kids, it’s that time of year again. You know, the time of year where we celebrate the coming of the Messiah by spending more than we can afford on consumer goods for ourselves and our loved ones. And then some more on ourselves. But what to buy for the special geek on your list? Never fear! Us Twitch-ers are here to guide the way with our massive list of quality geek-pleasing items. Read on!

This phase of the list is all DVD - we should have a book and collectible list coming along shortly - but do make sure to check on the region coding of the stuff we link to. We’re all multi-region enabled around here so we tend not to pay too much attention to region codes when shopping but you’d be wise to double check that you can actually play these things on your equipment before buying anything … where available we've gone with Region 1 (i.e. North American) releases in our links ...

Asian Film on DVD
2046
It's not available to pre-order yet, but this is the high quality Hong Kong edition, NOT the low grade mainland China edition that's doing the rounds online now. Releases December 10th, so they should be taking pre-orders any day now.
Abnormal Beauty
The latest from genre auteur Oxide Pang ... doesn't release until early January but presents are welcome at any time, right?
Alive
Ryuhei Kitamura's claustrophobic action flick ... I'm not such a big Kitamura fan myself but I know a lot of people who are ...
Aragami
Another Kitamura film, this time a one on one martial arts duelling period piece. Made as part of a drunken bet ...
Arahan
High energy Korean martial arts flick ... a lot of fun ... check our review archive for my detailed take on it ...
Avalon
Mamoru Oshii's brilliant sci-fi piece examining the nature of reality ... Don't let Miramax's fantastically ugly cover throw you, this is a truly beautiful film.
Bird People In China
My personal favorite of Takashi Miike's films ... check our review archive for a detailed take on it ...
Black Society Trilogy
Takashi Miike's early trio of crime films ... Rainy Dog (the middle of the three) stands as one of Miike's best ...
Black Sun: Nanking Massacre
One that Logboy's been waiting for for a good while ... do a search for Black Sun to get his take on it ...
Blue Spring
Toshiaki Toyoda's violent high school drama ... Toyoda has become one of my very favorite film makers and this film has a lot to do with why ... you can also find CDs from Thee Michelle Gun Elephant, the Japanese punk band responsible for the brilliant soundtrack ...
Casshern
Kaz Kiriya's brilliant sci-fi epic ... one of the most impressive debut films I've ever seen ... again, check the review archive for a detailed take on the film.
Cure
Yeah, it's been available for a little while, but if you haven't seen Kiyoshi Kurosawa's chilling supernatural serial killer flick then you are missing out huge ...
Gozu
Takashi Miike's thoroughly bizarre yakuza film owes as much to David Lynch and Carl Jung as to anything else ... seriously, you've never seen anything quite like this.
Hero
The domestic release of Zhang Yimou's brilliant martial arts epic ...
House of Flying Daggers
The Hong Kong release of Zhang Yimou's other brilliant martial arts epic ...
In the Mood For Love
Wong Kar Wai's masterpiece has just been remastered and re-released in Hong Kong ... if you couldn't quite justify spending the money for the Criterion edition, this is the way to go.
Infernal Affairs
The monumental eight DVD release of the entire trilogy ... if you just want the first film the domestic release is available here. Just ignore that wretched cover.
Ju-On
The Lion's Gate release of Takashi Shimizu's horror classic ... includes a commentary track from Sam Raimi ...
New Police Story
Jackie Chan's latest is apparently something of a return to form ...
Old Boy
We've plugged this one so much that you should be sick of hearing about it by now ... it really is that good.
Police Story Box Set
The box set of Jackie Chan's original Police Story trilogy, all prettied up and remastered. Yum.
R-Point
Korean war / horror film hybrid ... mine's still on order, but I've heard nothing but good things ...
Ring Trilogy Box Set
The UK box set of Hideo Nakata's original Ring and Ring 2, plus the prequel film, all prettied up and remastered.
Spider Forest
A time bending thriller from Korea ... GreenCine have declared it worthy of best-director honors ... my own take can be found in the review archive ...
Taegukgi
The beautifully packaged three disc Korean edition of this war epic ...
A Tale Of Two SistersThe UK edition of this brilliant Korean psychological horror film ... features a full slate of english-language special features ...
Tesseract
Oxide Pang's adaptation of the novel from Alex Garland ... I'm still waiting on my own copy to arrive ...
Three Extremes Anthology
Takashi Miike, Fruit Chan and Chan Wook Park all in one place. Do you need another reason? Check out the review archive for Logboy's take ...
Three Extremes: Dumplings
The extended 90 minute cut of Fruit Chan's contribution to the Three Extremes anthology. Truly disturbing stuff ...
White Collar Worker Kintaro
Another Miike title ... why yes, we are fans.
Yakuza Demon
See above. And there are more to come!
Yakuza Papers
HVE's much anticipated box set of Kinji Fukasaku's classic gangster films.
Young Thugs
Takashi Miike's pair of early, pseudo-biographical films. Once again, check the review archive.
Zatoichi / Sonatine
I have no idea why Miramax chose to bundle these but from what I'm hearing they've done a good job presenting both films and both get a decent batch of special features ... two great films for cheap!

Western Film on DVD
Bubba Ho Tep
Run, don't walk, to pick this one up. Bruce Campbell as an aged Elvis Presley fighting a soul sucking mummy with the aid of a black man who thinks he's JFK ... it's classic stuff ...
The Card Player
The UK edition of cult director Dario Argento's latest ...
Control Room
The critically lauded documentary revolving around Al-Jazeera and objectivity in the media ...
Donnie Darko - Director's Cut
The British 2 DVD set of the extended director's cut of Richard Kelly's compelling debut film ...
Epidemic
The only Lars Von Trier film I haven't seen, recently released by HVE. My copy's on the way ...
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2 Disc Edition)
It's still my pick for best film of the year and it gets an expanded two disc release in the first week of January ... odd timing, but still well worth picking up ...
Fahrenheit 9/11
I don't think this is as good as Moore's previoues film, but it still definitely stands as one of the most important films of the year and certainly the most talked about.
Fog of War
Errol Morris' Oscar winning documentary on Robert McNamara. Morris is one of the film world's great unsung heroes in my book ... consistently brilliant stuff ...
Hellboy Director's Cut
I pity the poor soul who bought the two disc theatrical edition of Hellboy ... this set omits nothing from that earlier release and adds a stack more of everything that makes the character so great ...
Kill Bill
Quentin Tarantino's genre mash up revenge epic ... the domestic release is cheaper, but if you want the full color, extra blood added Japanese release you've got to be prepared to spend a little bit more. Here's the Japanese twin pack of both films.
Lord of the Rings Extended Editions Box
I know a few people who held off on buying the Lord of the Rings flicks hoping that there would be an edition expanded even beyond what the four disc sets had to offer. Sorry, nope. That's all there is. But you can play catch up quick and easy, because the box set of all three extended editions releases December 14th. And don't even think of buying the theatrical releases ... the long cuts are absolutely the definitive versions ...
The Matrix Ultimate Box
Yeah, I'm not quite sure what they were thinking with that third one either, but the trilogy's brilliant up till then and I will say that the third one grew on me with a second viewing. This set features a new and improved transfer of the first film, a slew of new special features, enormously improved packaging (I hate those cardboard clip cases) and is surprisingly inexpensive ... I've already sold off my individual versions to make space for this one ...
Napoleon Dynamite
Friggin' sweet.
Return of the King
The final chapter ... December 14th ...
Romasanta
This is here based purely on that trailer I posted a couple weeks back, but it looks to be truly compelling stuff.
Shaolin Soccer
Yeah, Miramax chopped it to bits for the theatrical release, but they had the good sense to include the original version on the DVD release ... compare the two cuts and marvel at their ineptitude!
Shaun of the Dead
One of the best genre films ever made. Hilarious and horrifying, often at the same time ...
Star Wars Trilogy
My 'don't support Lucas' constant revision' resolve is holding up surprisingly well, but here it is for those who don't feel quite so strongly.
Videodrome
The new Criterion edition of the Cronenberg classic ...
Wild At Heart
David Lynch's Cannes winner finally makes it to DVD in December ... by all accounts it's a solid release, too ...

TV on DVD
Big Train - Series 1 & 2
Two seasons of stellar sketch comedy from the writers of Father Ted and starring Simon Pegg of Shaun of the Dead and Spaced fame. Lesser know, but often brilliant ...
Black Books Series 1-3 Box Set
The complete Black Books, starring Shaun of the Dead's Dylan Moran as nihilistic, alcoholic used bookshop owner Bernard Black.
Carnivale
Six Feet Under and The Sopranos are still attracted all the attention over at HBO, but for my money Carnivale and Deadwood are where it's at. Carnivale is a brooding, Lynchian, frequently bizarre stroy set in the world of a 1930's travelling carnival ... beautifully shot and acted by a stellar cast that includes Lynch regular Michael Anderson, T3's Nick Stahl and veteran character actor Clancy Brown in a role he was born for. Brilliant stuff. Somebody buy me this.
Deadwood
HBO's other brilliant newcomer ... another stellar cast anchored by Timothy Olyphant, Brad Dourif and Canada's Molly Parker (mmm ... Molly Parker ...) it's rough, brutal and brilliant. Starts stronger and just keeps getting better ...
Eerie, Indiana
This one's for Canfield ... consider it a youthful version of the X Files ...
Firefly
The treatment and cancellation of this show stands as conclusive proof that the people at Fox Television aren't the brightest of folks. Very likely the best thing that Joss Whedon has ever worked on, and that's saying something ...
League of Gentlemen
These have been out for a while, but they're brilliant and nothing outside of the first season has ever been seen in North America. Buy them all and brace yourself for the coming League of Gentlemen feature film ...
Little Britain
More demented British genius ... one of the funniest things I've seen in years. Worth it for the demented narration from Tom Baker - the Doctor Who of my youth - alone, but there is so much more than that ...
The Office
The complete Office - both seasons plus the Christmas specials. It's hugely acclaimed, and for good reason ...
Spaced : Definitive Collector's Edition
The most insanely pop-culture literate program in the history of the planet also happens to be fantastically funny. This is what all of the Shaun of the Dead folk were doing before Shaun ...

Animation on DVD
Angry Kid
It's not for everyone, and definitely not for children, but Angry Kid just makes me howl. How much longer do we have to wait for season two? Pretty please?
Conan: The Boy in the Future
Miyazaki played a key role on this television show, available now for the first time with English subtitles ...
Creature Comforts - Vols. 1 And 2
Classic stuff from Aardman Animation - the folks behind Wallace and Gromit. You ever see that Oscar winning Creature Comforts short with the talking zoo animals? This is that same concept spread over two series of nine minute shorts ... I bought this before the combined edition released, paid a lot more, and it was worth every penny ...
Ghost in the Shell: Innocence
Bad cover or not, this is one of the finest pieces of technical animation you will ever see. Visually breathtaking ...
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
The television series based on the same manga as the films, Stand Alone Complex is much more straightforward and action oriented than the films ... one of the best anime shows to come out of Japan in recent years ...
Happy Tree Friends
Not meant for children. Really not meant for children. Really incredibly bloody. But bloody in a frequently hilarious fashion. They're up to volume three now ...
Initial D
This is the Initial D box set that Mack was raving about a couple days back ...
Iron Giant
Brad Bird's much acclaimed and greatly overlooked first feature is getting a second life thanks to the overwhelming success of The Incredibles ...
Last Exile
Our good friend Opus swears by this show ... this is the first three volumes bundled together ...
Looney Tunes Golden Collection 2
The second four disc set of classic Warner Brothers cartoons ...
Paranoia Agent
The first volume of Satoshi Kon's brilliant Paranoia Agent ... easily lives up to the high standards he set himself with Millennium Actress, Perfect Blue and Tokyo Godfathers ...
Robbie The Reindeer Collector's Edition
Even if you've already got the original Robbie the Reindeer on DVD you may want to upgrade to this one, especially if you've got the re-dubbed US version. Original voices intact and there's a second very funny Robbie story on here.
Rocky and Bullwinkle
Season Two of the classic Jay Ward 'toon ...
Samurai Champloo
Not out till early January, but this is the first volume of Shinichiro Watanbe's follow up to the classic Cowboy Bebop ...
Shrek 2
He's big, he's green and kids dig him.
Spongebob Squarepants Season 2
I can quote most of season one. Seriously. It's an illness.
Strong Bad
This had better show up soon or my mail man's going to be subjected to some extreme violence ... a three disc set featuring the first one hundred Strong Bad emails from the pages of Homestar Runner. If you don't know what that is you obviously have too much of a life.
Tokyo Godfathers
Satoshi Kon's third feature ... loosely based on the story of the three magi, so it's topical, even.
Wonderful Days
The big budget Korean anime currently shilling for an Oscar nomination ... the fusion of animation techniques can be just a touch uneven, but when it works - which it usually does - it's absolutely stunning. This is the sexy limited edition version ... probably the nicest piece of packaging I currently own ...

Reader Comments

If Mack, Nick and Canfield ever get their lists in to me this will grow ... keep checking back ... I will be adding books, graphic novels and collectibles at some point but I've got to stop before my head explodes. I can't believe how long this has taken ...

Suggestions always welcome ...

This is just you!?! Cripes shopping for you is going to be expensive this Christmas. Just keep that sweet loving comingand perhaps there will be a little somethin' somethin' in your stocking from moi.

Me and Logboy, actually ... where's your list, man? This was your idea! Produce!

» Posted by Todd at November 16, 2004 06:47 PM

I'd also add Freaks And Geeks to the "TV On DVD" list. Quite a bit more, um, "mainstream" than the other shows on the list, but still excellent. One of the best TV shows I've ever seen, and the DVDs are absolutely loaded with features.

Also, I've shown Spaced to quite a few people here, and every one of them has been sucked in. The finger gunfight always does it. Oh, and Last Exile really is that good. I swear.

Id definately agree with spaced. Especially with the special edition being released (http://www.play.com/play247.asp?page=title&r=R2&title=182576)

As for graphic novels, 'The Walking Dead' is a really good character based zombie title. The second graphic novel is coming out this month too.

A great list there! Many of my favorite movies in there. Just ordered the expensive IA box even though I have the individual releases - just had to get it :)
Now if I'f only get the Yakuza Papers box and a good release of House of flying daggers...

Oh yeah.
Coincidentally, Koreandvds.com has just started a Christmas event from which new customers can get a 25% coupon if referred by existing customers (which get a 10% coupon from referring, I think - it's a bit unclear but I think this is how it works), meaning some nice deals for Christmas :)

Check it out for those korean titles on the list:

For your friends with cushy jobs, I'd recommend the movie "Office Space" on dvd. And a stapler.

» Posted by reneedo at November 17, 2004 12:39 PM

Great list! I would add "Buffy" season 7 to the TV list as well.

As for books and graphic novels, "Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell" is an indispensible, mammoth fantasy novel about dueling wizards in 19th century England.

And Neil Gaiman's "1602" graphic novel was recently released in hardcover.

Just thought I'd add that RightStuf International, Inc. has a some really sweet deals going on right now... like the Jin-Roh Special Edition DVD for only $19.99 (plus shipping) and Witch Hunter Robin Volume 1 + LE Artbox, T-Shirt, etc. for $25.99 (plus shipping).

» Posted by opus at November 19, 2004 07:33 PM

I just want the Spec. Edition Iron Giant DVD please.

I'm simple.

» Posted by dave at November 21, 2004 03:41 AM

I was perusing the latest specials from The Right Stuf, and they have the complete "Last Exile" box set available to order for only $120 (plus shipping), which works out to under $17 a disc. Which is an absolute steal if you ask me. Click here for the details.
