GORA Trailer - European Sci-Fi Spoof

gora.jpgI'd read bits and pieces about G.O.R.A. - the sci-fi spoof that's done massive business throughout Europe - but I hadn't been able to see a frame of footage until just now when a reader sent in a link to this trailer. I was expecting it to be something low grade - it came out of Turkey and the 1970's Turkish takes on Star Wars and Superman are b-film cult classics - but this thing looks to be shockingly high quality and very, very funny. There are some pitch perfect knocks on both Star Wars and the Matrix films in there ... now I've just got to find out about a DVD ...

Hi everyone,
Here are a few things about this movie... just to put things straight.

It'll be out on 12th of November. And I've heard about this limited viewing arranged for England (considered as a b-movie novelty I guess). So English subs with a region 2 DVD is quite likely. Yet some of the jokes will be -daily life in- Turkey orieneted, which makes it kinda odd to English speaking world.

BTW, I'll be sending a review right after I see the movie.

G.O.R.A will probably be the most succesful turkish movie in world base , cem yilmaz the most funniest comedian in turkey is actually making the fun of matrix, starwars ,,etc in the movie ,If see the movie its guaranteed that You ll have fun ! Turkish guarantee

REVIEW:
I've seen the movie today. It is freakin hilarious. There is bits and pieces of Star Wars/5th Element/Matrix take ons but the movie is not exactly a "Scary Movie" type.

The bad news is: the movie is way too Turkish Daily Life Oriented. Especially about Turkish hillbilly/redneck types! So if you do not have a good sense of what's going on down here, then probably you'll end up feeling screwed for the 15 bucks you'll pay when it's out on DVD.

» Posted by Kem at November 12, 2004 09:51 PM

Anybody has any idea when the DVD will be out?

» Posted by Ozzie at November 18, 2004 06:03 PM

The film has just come out in Turkey, so I'd guess at least six months before the first DVD editions start to hit ...

» Posted by Todd at November 18, 2004 10:25 PM

Hillbilly/Redneck jokes translate well for every culture.

I live in San Diego CA, so I don't not have the chance to see the movie but by looking at the trailer it is awesome. As far as the translation, I agree some things are almost impossible to translate or ever you can they are really odd. Don't miss this movie.

This is the BBC REview on the moview.

G.O.R.A.
A tediously wacky spoof that sends up Star Wars and The Fifth Element (ooh, daring), G.O.R.A. finds a gobby Turkish carpet salesman (Cem Yilmaz) abducted by ETs. With effeminate robots, lightsabers and a villain who looks like a Klingon crossed with Richard E Grant, it's got fewer laughs than Mel Brooks's tumbleweed blower Spaceballs. Beam us up, beam us down but beam us anywhere but here.

A long time ago in a country far, far away (well, Turkey in 1982 to be exact), a group of nutty filmmakers decided to create a movie that became known as "Turkish Star Wars". Recycling clips from George Lucas's space opera epic with some homemade film footage featuring Turkish actors and plywood special effects, the result was a goofy, copyright-infringing comedy mess. Twenty-two years later this lame parody tries to follow in its footsteps with some state-of-the-art Turkish CGI and a comic turn from writer/star Yilmaz as a Brylcreemed, cocksure salesman sent off to the planet Gora.

"THE GAGS COME WITH THEIR OWN COBWEBS"

Lots of chatter about The Force and a man dressed as The Emperor from Star Wars are the extent of the Hot Shots style spoofery, as Yilmaz goes through his wheeler-dealer comic shtick (imagine the Turkish answer to Del Boy). The gags come with their own cobwebs: depressingly homophobic humour, a blue-faced alien who looks like Bernard Manning (is there a connection there?) and a "Rastafarian" Turkish bar owner called Bob Marley Faruk. It's tedious, pointless and about as entertaining as a cholera outbreak. And at 128 minutes it's a real star trek.

In Turkish with English subtitles

The BBC review sux. Reviewer is not objective. The film has many strong referrals to Turkish culture. It is mostly those parts that make this movie funny for me.

This movie is gonna rock. Hollywood wake up and smell the coffee!!! It's like turkish star wars, only better. It's like the Turkish Excorcist on Steroids!!! 4 teh win!!

I watched the movie twice while I was in Turkey last week and both times spent the better part of 2 hours laughing hard.

However, just like Kem said, GORA is hilarious if you are Turkish, and sub-par if you are not..

Cem Yilmaz is a very talented comedian but GORA is way too "Turkish" and not universal enough :/
