77th Academy Awards. Foreign Language Film. Submissions List.

academyawardsmall.jpg The Submissions list for next years oscars are here. For "Best Foreign Language" film anyhow. You can view them here, at Oscar Watch, or click down below for a copy.

Probably one of the fairest awards given out, i think. I remember watching an interview with an academy award voter who said that he, like many, would simply pick who they had worked with in the past and gotten along with pretty well : it's the "He's a nice chap" approach to a meritocracy.

Anyhow, note the inclusion of "Taegukgi" from Korea, out now on DVD in various editions in various asian countries. I honestly don't know anything about the others : educate me. Oh, and also note the list apparently contains many errors, so any corrections welcome too.

Some interesting choices...

"House Of Flying Dagger" - This is a no-brainer, and since Sony has it, maybe it'll get some decent promotion.

"The Five Obstructions" - I'm sure Todd is thrilled about this one. ;)

"Kontroll" - Interesting pick... having seen it, it doesn't strike me as Oscar material, but oh what could've been.

"Nobody Knows" - Again, a no-brainer considering all of the hype this got from Cannes. Really wish I would've been able to see it in Toronto.

"Tae Guk Gi" - Haven't seen it so I can't say for sure, but I still think "OldBoy" should've got the nod.

"Night Watch" - From what I saw, it looks entertaining enough... but I just don't think the Academy will go for it.

"The Overture" - Another no-brainer... it's a pretty good film, but not Oscar-status.

I agree with you about Tae Guk Gi. I'm sure it's a good flick... But OldBoy was excellent.

Kontroll was pretty good I thought.

I'm surprised The Five Obstructions qualifies for this year, actually ... it did the Toronto Film Fest in 2003 and I thought it had screened elsewhere as well. There's a good shot it'll get nominated purely because of Von Trier but I doubt it'll win.

Turtles Can Fly and 20:30:40 have all generated a lot of positive notice, but my money's on The Sea Inside to Win.

Kontroll: Capsule Here. A fantastic motion picture which reminded me so much of Kevin Smith's Clerks for it's indie gusto. Great soundtrack to boot...SEE THIS FILM!

Turtles Can Fly: Capsule Here. Haunting and powerful, and perhaps to much of a look on the civilian side of things for any consideration? Foreign Policy and Academy Awards do not mix.

House of Flying Daggers: Capsule Here. Sublime visual perfection, perhaps the academy passed on HERO due to it's overly-intellectual bent on story.

The Alzheimer Case: Capsule Here. Solid commercial film packs a lot of Michael Mann stylings into an interesting story.

Nobody Knows: A buddy of mine has this picked as his top film of the year so far...It reduced his testosterone machismo into a sobbing girly-man and he is proud of it.

Nothing from Down Under?: Hmmmm, Is Australia not a foreign country or did they just not submit yet (my vote: "Human Touch" Also, a New Zealand film won the top prize at Toronto (Peoples Choice Award) is also curiously absent...

On a completely different Academy Award note...If Ghost in the Shell is not nominated (for that matter SteamBoy and Howl's Moving Castle should be considered), it will be a crime...

What's it saying when you try? I had a weird hiccup myself a couple days ago ...

by your other post (later today), I take it you figured out the problem. I will tell you that it was pretty polite as it chucked my long-winded comment into the ether.
