Will you have to wait until 2046 to see 2046?

Wong-Kar-Wai.jpgFinally! After four years Wong Kar Wai's 2046 hit theatres in China today. No more going back and re-editing. No more reshoots. Just give us the goods! Well... you know... once China's had it's fill. Please?

Even Tony Leung got fed up with the lengthy drawn out process. An excerpt from an article running in ChinaDaily.com...

"I heard Wong was going to shoot more scenes with Gong Li and Faye Wong, so I shaved my moustache immediately," Leung, who starred in 'In the Mood For Love' and 'Happy Together', told Britain's Guardian newspaper. "You just can't go on shooting like that; you have to stop."

Zhang-Ziyi.jpgAnd things apparently aren't going very well for the uber-hot Zhang Ziyi at home. Read reports of fan unrest here.

Now. If you'll excuse me I have a couple Wong Kar Wai's sitting on my coffee table to get to so I am up to speed on the man's films.

Well, you can certainly never go wrong with Chungking Express. That movie was like a punch to my gut and was one of the main reasons I started to REALLY get into HK cinema, not just the chopsocky/martial arts stuff.

Michael: Thanks for the heads up. Given my appreciation for all asian cinema it's shocking to even myself that I hadn't seen a Wong Kar Wai film until Hands in Eros at TIFF. I was sure that Todd wanted to slap me silly.

2046 proves that wong kar wai is either a genious beyond comprehension or just someone that needs help. i am surprised that it took so long. my favorite quote from those involve came from actress Faye Wong who said " i will not act in his movie again, ever! " and she loved his movies!

Yes, "Chungking Express" is a fantastic film. But my fave Wong Kar-Wai flick is "In The Mood For Love". It's probably more accessible and less quirky than some of his other films, but I also find it to be the most moving and impacting of his films. And it's also incredibly beautiful - Christopher Doyle does some of his best work - and Maggie Cheung is the very definition of "radiant". If you can, get the Criterion release. It's *really* nice.

BTW, I'm sure you'd love to be there to console Zhang Ziyi in her time of trouble, Mack.

MonkeyPeaches has just put up their review of the film, giving it 4 stars, and calling it Wong Kar-Wai's "most stylish work ever". Hmmmm...
