Hi Guys, Canfield here. I got back from Cornerstone Festival, which almost killed me this year, to discover that the long relaxing summer of movie catch-up I had planned wasn’t yet to be. Several power outages, a crashed hard drive and two weeks of not having a phone meant that along with all the unpacking and putting away of stuff the fest necessitates I also had to retrace my mental steps on a number of things that I had planned to post after the festival but which were now lost to the ether.
First up is a review of Bridge To Terabithia. Why bother resurrecting it 4 weeks after release? I originally wrote the piece because I found myself so surprised to have enjoyed it so much. Middling family movies are a dime a dozen these days but this adaptation of Katherine Patersons Newbery Award winning novel brings a depth along with the spectacle thanks to a story worthy of the fx and a cast that is more than up to the challenge. A young runner named Jess finds himself outdistanced by the new girl in town and surprised when they become such fast friends. Through the power of their imaginations they create a magical kingdom named Terabithia and populate it with fantastic creatures only to have their vision tested when tragedy strikes. I’ll offer no spoilers except to say that this film deals reasonably well with a topic that most kids films wouldn’t touch these days and parents of more sensitive types may want to watch it first to be ready for the inevitable questions it raises. This is first class stuff that flew under the radar and the DVD is first class too. 2 audio commentaries, a music video and 2 featurettes round out an impressive set of Special Features.
YES, I agree, one of the most wonderful children movies I have ever seen. Sad but beautiful.
