Tsai Ming-liang wants to talk. That's what he says in an interview with The Star Malaysia today. Having had his film, I Don't Want To Sleep Alone (Hei Yan Quan), cut in five places by the Malaysian censors and relegated to only a limited release, Tsai doesn't seem too unhappy about the situation, but uses it positively as a platform for discussions about censorship, says the report.
In a way, he says he is glad that the whole controversy about his film has had people talking. “If I had refused to comply with the five cuts, then there would not have been any dialogue. I would like the dialogue to go further and beyond my film," the paper quotes him as saying.
Tsai also talks about how audiences today don't want to think and just want to be entertained. He also discusses a little bit about his film. In a sidebar story, he talks about what happened at the Golden Horse Awards and why he pulled out of competition.
The Star report: "Cutting for change"
Why Tsai left the Golden Horse Awards
Thank you for these ongoing reports on Tsai's negotiations with the censors; always interesting.
It could be a good opportunity to screen the movie with black screens and a white message at each cut in the movie. The message could be "Cut by Censorship board. Discuss at [here a website]".
