The latest from the director of Bad Lieutenant, Go Go Tales is a satirical comedy set in a Manhatten go-go bar. Slated to play out of competition at this year's Cannes Festival Abel Ferrara's latest has a cast that just won't quit, starting with the likes of Willem Dafoe and Matthew Modine, continuing on to Bob Hoskins and Asia Argento, then casting its net overseas for a string of French stars and models.
Go Go Tales recounts the tale of one fateful evening in Paradise. Ray (Dafoe) and Jay (Hoskins) face imminent foreclosure by the landlady when Johnny (Modine) tells Ray he is no longer willing to lend him the money to keep the club open. Things have gotten so bad that even the dancers are threatening to “strip-strike”, and to make matters worse, Ray has lost their winning lottery ticket!
There's no sign of a trailer just yet but the official website does include an on-set diary and a stills gallery.
Ah Abel Ferrara, how King of New York, Ms 45 and Bad Lieutenant made me want to be you and meeting you and hanging out with you changed my mind.
Abel is a mad genius for sure and I will watch anything he does but I wouldn't trade places with him for anything.
His last good film was THE FUNERAL some 10 years ago but I will admit that even the disappointments he has delivered in the meantime have all been at least interesting. I wish he'd do more audio commentaries for DVDs though! I would totally buy every one of the above mentioned disappointments if they only included a commentary with the guy. Some of the best times you can ever hope to have are to be had when listening to the commentaries for DRILLER KILLER and KONY.
Terry. I know what you mean. I had the "fortune" of living in the same apartment building as he in Manhattan a few years ago. Every time I saw him he was plastered, smelly and had some starry eyed film student he met at the bar with him. Bud he makes some damn fine movies.
I met The Man in an illegal afterhours spot in the W. Village back in the late 90's. He was hitting up some brassy blonde, who's best years were behind her, for twenty dolars.Check it out: I remember her saying, "Some girls get Steven Speilberg. I get Abel Ferrara". Is that hilarious? Anyway, I got to talk to him for a bit. He seemed interested in the fact that I'd written s/plays. But that crazy-ass woman wouldn't let up on him, so he made a beeline away from there.
Anyway, say what one will about his work, but who else makes such thrilling films which are so dangerously alive moment-to-moment? I wish others were up to the job, but that's too much of a risk. All of his more successful contemporaries are busy turning out product for their corporate masters. Hello, Marty. If Abel could've stopped mumbling and put on a suit, he could've had Brian DePlama's career. Screw it. Abel makes nothing but the strongest, most personal kind of art. Much much love to you, my brother.
