Johnnie To's "Exiled" To Receive Hollywood Treatment

(Posted In Action Asia Film News )

Patrick Frater writes that Media Asia, responsible for "Infernal Affairs" and Hollywood remake "The Departed", as well as "Confession of Pain", has set up a remake of Johnnie To's "Exiled". Samuel Hadida's Davis Films acquired the remake rights through Los Angeles-based producer Molly Hassell and plans to develop the remake as a big-budget action picture. Says Hadida, "Exiled" is a "masterful film. The story is as compelling as Media Asia's 'Infernal Affairs' trilogy. We look forward to similarly developing the 'Exiled' story into a major English-language film for the global marketplace." A Twitch favorite, "Exiled" showcased superb photography and masterful action sequences with more than a nod to Sergio Leone's spaghetti Westerns to breathe new life into Milky Way's familiar theme of male bonding. To's film screened at the Venice Film Festival last year and was shown at the Toronto International Film Festival before being picked up by Magnolia Pictures.

Isn't it ironic? A US remake of a western-influenced film.

Ummmm, what exactly is wrong with the original? It's about as perfect as it can get.

Unless you are able to resurrect Humphrey Bogart or Robert Mitchum, or seriously de-age Alain Delon, who has the chops to handle the Anthony Wong's "Blaze" character?

*sigh* Unlike Internal Affairs, which at least provided a juicy and nuanced script to work from, I don't think Exiled offers anything except Johnnie To's original and complete vision. I loved Exiled but I really think it's a director's film, and anyone else working from that exact same script wouldn't have made it as successful. To has been making great movies in this genre for a long time, and all that experience is up on the screen. I'm not saying it can't work, but I think it will be a lot harder to pull off than the Departed.

OK, I will probably sound like a disgruntled protectionist but:NO! NO! NO! say it ain't so!

Does anyone know how to remove these daggers from my heart? Seriously, I think I might be in trouble here there are so many. Which one should I remove first? Hello?

Kurt, come on.

You already know its going to be Bruce Willis.

Heh. My mind is still reeling at the idiocy of this. You jest, but think about it from a casting agents POV - Mr. Willis already has Spaghetti Western remakes under his belt (the "A Fist Full of Dollars" retread "Last Man Standing").

Ugh.

I just vomited in my mouth.
nah really, remakes are fine as long as nods go to the original unlike with "The Departed"

I don't feel any distaste, I just wish them luck and wonder what exactly they are going to remake.

It's like when I heard someone bought the remake rights to "Daisy". What on Earth is there to remake? What part of that story was copyrightable enough for people to have to pay money for?

Same here.

» Posted by Ardvark at March 27, 2007 10:31 AM

Someone actually bought the remake rights to DAISY?

Hahahahahahahaha.

If Samuel Hadida can attract Tony Scott to direct "Exiled" remake, then I believe the remake will be 300% better than the original.

( Tony Scott had directed two movies for Samuel Hadida )

By the way, Gold Circle Films did buy the remake rights of DAISY.

Tony Scott is a hack.

I dont get it.Why even pay for remake rights. It doesnt have a unique storyline like Infernal Affairs.I'll admit Exiled just oozes with style due to To's direction but the story is hardly original.

Nitty, my point exactly.

» Posted by Ardvark at March 27, 2007 05:37 PM

Mary, I'm not sure why you think Tony Scott can outdirect Johnnie To. The man needs to take a whole lot of Ritalin to match To's methodical direction.

Either way, best way to show your love for the original is not to see the remake. The Departed is an exception, as on many parts it is as good if not better than the original. (I always preferred IA2 to IA anyway.)

If Tony Scott manages to outdirect Johnnie To on this film I'll be very surprised.
But...

I'd definitely love to watch ANY film which can truthfully claim to be 300% better than Exiled!!

they're moving onto crime / action movies... leaving behind the j-horror and going onto HK-drama. oh dear. we should make twitch a subscription service - you must be able to prove you're not interested in following coverage in relation to doing anything other than licensing and releasing original material - perhaps a questionnaire and a prenup are necessary?
