Concept Art for Imagi Studio's Gatchaman

(Posted In Action Animation Asia Film News Sci-Fi / Fantasy USA and Canada )

gatchaman-concept-art.jpgIt's less than a week till the release of Imagi's debut CG animated film TMNT. Meanwhile at the animation studio, pre-production is already underway for their next project based on the long-running anime franchise, Gatchaman. A gallery of eight concept art is being on display at the studio's revamped official site which feature shots of futuristic cities, hi-tech mecha and spaceships. Keeping in line with the superhero theme, TMNT writer/director Kevin Munroe plans to deliver a version closely to the original 1972 series with Katse and Galactor as the main villians. Here's his take on the film from the Q&A interview at the site:

"...it's a great story about finding family in the least suspected places and becoming master of your destiny. We're doing it as a PG-13 movie and we'll be examining political storylines...mind you, all buried in a sci-fi action-packed adventure. Fans and non-fans will be pleased."

Not a fan myself as I'm not fimilar with the series but by the looks of the artwork, I'm intrigued. Gatchaman is scheduled for theatrical released in 2008.

Thanks Wolf for the heads up on this! I'm not sure if others are having similar problems but when I tried accessing the "Gatchaman" section of the Imagi site, I could only get the opening logo art, couldn't access any of the featured concept art (used both Foxfire and IE). I have Macromedia Flash installed but perhaps the images have been taken down? I'm glad that Munroe will be staying close to the original anime and not using elements of the Sandy Frank version. Still not too crazy about the fact that it will be an all CGI movie but hopefully it won't be too bad.

Cooooool. I was just recently introduced to Gatchaman earlier this year and liked it enough to watch whatever I could get my hands on.

Didn't realize a movie was on the way but this is excellent! The pictures look fantastic!

Did anyone see on their website that there's going to be a 3D Astroboy movie?

You might know Gatchaman better by the US redubt re-edit that was very popular with kids in the 70s as Battle of the Planets. "Transmute!"
