Delayed for release in Italy, now scheduled for October 31st 2007, Halloween of all times of the year... now it's within wranglings as to how extreme it's content might be. Interesting. Seems as how Argento's work has notoriously suffered at the hands of censors to the point of confusion - it seems even the man himself wasn't entirely sure which cut of 'Phenomena' was issued, hence the integral cut appearing after the uncut original version - and the nature of the film business, eternally cynical and definitely more-so as a result of tightening windows for DVD releases, spiraling budgets, wringing the financial neck of every project, it's even likely not that possible to tell what's behind the apparent need or desire to fiddle with Argento's latest project, beyond what is described as excessive violence - which is, surely, part of the joy of his work, no?
If you can read Italian (I can't) then translate the text at the Profondo Rosso shop site and let us know the exact details, speculation aside, as it's an interesting development in what is otherwise a period between seeing the complete trailer and film which is pretty much filled with a painful wait.
Personally, after two failed, truly abysmal Masters of Horror episodes - Jenifer the worst of the two, at least Pelts had a decent story and some ultra-gore set pieces, some lurid lighting also, strangely reminiscent though not the same as older work - and a long long time since a new piece of work that was beyond periodical reassessment, I am not too hopeful for 'The Third Mother' for the most part. Small part of me, the side that still enjoys the old work - cliched as it may be to have regard for early work over newer stuff, whatever the medium, whomever the artist - wants so desperately for the trilogy to round off, the logic to disappear, the magical imagination of youth to return, the lucky accidents to dominate the need for something that makes sense or fits in. I can tell you what the point of all this is: public relations. If something is rumored to get "censored", the target audience will be all over it. And then comes the unrated DVD and the director's cut DVD and the revisited blasphemous edition etc. etc.
I thought Argento's were among the best of the Masters of Horror series. To each their own.
Same here. Jennifer was one of the few episodes that I could watch till the end. Haven't seen Pelts though.
I mostly agree with logboy. The only episode I despised more than JENIFER in the first season was the Joe Dante thing. PELTS was pretty bad but I didn't hate it. It was forgettable and mediocre like so many of the MOH episodes but it had some interesting lighting and gory set pieces going for it whereas JENIFER was just ridiculously predictable and one of only two episodes where the KNB effects disappointed. Her face looked like a cheap Halloween mask.
