Second US Trailer For Bong Joon-Ho's The Host

(Posted In Action Asia Film News Sci-Fi / Fantasy Trailer Alert )

hostUSposter.jpgA new US trailer for Bong Joon-Ho's The Host has just gone online and unlike the first version which played the film as a straight up action piece this one reflects the different moods and tones of the film much better. Very, very nice. The film is due to hit US screens March 9th.

My review here.

As we all anxiously await our LE Gift Box Sets to arrive this newest trailer just makes us salivate with Pavlovian glee! I may even host a THE HOST video party one weekend.

This is the most disgraceful Trailer that could have been created for this film.
Pick a direction and go with it, this mix and match crap has to go.
Someone at Magnolia needs to be fired!

American trailers are scarcely better than American poster art - we've had the knowledge of how to do it right seemingly selectively erased from our memories, MEN IN BLACK style.

That being said, it's a great improvement over the red-band trailer, and from what I've heard about the film's blend of horror, humor, family, and action, it's not at all a disgrace and certainly nothing anyone should lose their job over. I don't understand all the people ordering this DVD already - unless you've already seen it. There's no way in hell my first viewing of this will be anywhere but in a theatre near me, preferably a crowded one.

Only complaints - the font for the text in the trailer sucks, and the use of that much English in the trailer, and NO subtitled Korean, is definitely deceptive and will, mark my words, result in lots of illiterate Americans angrily threatening underpaid theatre employees with violence and demanding their money back if this actually goes out wide. However, I clearly see Magnolia's gamble here:

A: Trick the half-wits into thinking it's in English.

B: Get a strong opening weekend on the backs of the half-wits - after that first weekend they'll all go warn their half-wit friends that "that movie sucks, you have to read it, I punched out the cashier when she wouldn't give me my f*ckin' money back", so...

C: Let the excellent reviews they're counting on getting carry the weight into the following weekend (as you've now lost the half-wits due to subtitles), drawing a more educated clientèle who wouldn't have checked out "whatever that new monster movie is.", but aren't going to bitch and moan about subtitles.

D: Rake in the cash.

Rhythm-X - What makes you think the half-wits will even go see a Japanese (I know, I know) movie? Where's Will Ferral? Is Beyonce in this?
