Description: "The young and shy university student Samantha believes that she is leading an ordinary life. But an undreamt-of secret is hidden behind her childlike smile. ¶ It is the beginning of Christmas break. Sam does not go home for the holidays as her parents have very little time for her and, as a result, she always feels neglected when at home. Instead of celebrating Christmas, she attends a winter course on clinical psychology. ¶ Sam is unhappily in love with Max, the most popular guy at her college, but she is far too shy to reveal her feelings to him. Also, there is Poe, girlfriend of Max and Sam's biggest rival. She mostly dresses all black, has an extremely sharp mind and does not allow anyone to get in the way of her mysterious plans. Sam hates and admires Poe at the same time. Renn is Sam's roommate and best friend. He secretly loves Sam but she does not return his feelings. ¶ Sam's life starts turning into a nightmare when she receives a mysterious and bizarre e-mail. From that moment on she is haunted by hallucinations which slowly make her doubt her sanity. ¶ Sam wants to find out what exactly is wrong with her and comes across information about a certain Professor Ragloid who experimented with the manipulation of human consciousness and subconscious. Ragloid, however, died - together with his wife - in a fire in his laboratory years ago. ¶ Everything turns for the worse when Sam discovers mysterious scars on her body. Desperate, she turns to Berg, who has almost completed his studies of medicine. Berg, a very polite and serious young man, tries to calm Sam down and wants to examine her. However, he seems to know more about Sam's problem than he actually admits. But he is found dead in his laboratory before he can reveal his secrets. Sam is the murder suspect as she was the last one to have seen him alive. When Sam finds a blood-stained letter opener under her pillow she starts believing in her own guilt as well. ¶ Sam has one last chance to find out the truth: She has to go into the deep cellar vault of the library, where the university laboratory used to be situated. In the suffocating dark, Sam makes a discovery that by far exceeds her imagination...."

Robin Aubert's Saint Martyrs of the Damned (Saints-Martyrs-des-Damnés)

Sales Agent: Max Films Inc.

Cast: François Chénier, Isabelle Blais, Monique Mercure, Monique Miller, Patrice Robitaille, Alexis Martin, Hubert Loiselle, Pierre Collin, Mathilde Lavigne, Alec Poirier, David Savard, Renaud Lacelle-Bourdon, Luc Senay, Sylvie Boucher, André Lacoste, Carl Hennebert, Germain Houde, and Michel Forget

Description: "One of the most visually striking Canadian films in recent years, Robin Aubert's baroque and eerie supernatural thriller Saints-Martyrs-des-Damnés follows tabloid reporter Flavien Juste (François Chénier) as he investigates strange disappearances in a remote, rundown village. Sent there by his surrogate father, the paper's editor, Flavien thinks it's just another routine assignment. The tabloid regularly concocts stories about transsexual pig-men marrying hermaphrodites and the like, but the situation he's about to enter is a lot weirder than the usual assortment of oddities and alien abductions. ¶ For one thing, there's the lodge where he and his photographer pal Armand (Patrice Robitaille) are registered, and its bizarre proprietors: two women named Malvina (Monique Mercure, Monique Miller). There's also the pair of oddball greasers who keep trying to provoke Flavien into a fight; or the aloof and winsome Tite-Fille (Isabelle Blais), who entertains her cattle by playing raunchy blues riffs; and the woman in the tattered wedding dress. Meanwhile, a man in a crude mask stalks Flavien as he searches for Armand, who has suddenly vanished on their very first night in town. And everyone in town seems disturbed by the sight of Flavien. ¶ Propelled by a startling visual scheme that weds the creepiest of David Lynch and Todd Browning, the film oscillates between dark, dungeon-like imagery and nausea-inducing, blazing white light that mirrors Flavien's perplexed state. Dreams, reality and hallucinations begin to intermingle, and before long he can't even trust his own eyes. ¶ More than just a conventional thriller, Saints-Martyrs-des-Damnés smartly explores themes of identity and mortality, responsibility and paternity. Flavien is eventually forced to confront his own mysterious origins as well as accept some newfound responsibilities. These aren't easy tasks for the jaded, ultra-rational reporter, who's seen so many frauds he's preternaturally determined to debunk anything that looks even remotely supernatural. Aubert, however, is wise enough to know that the issues he has Flavien dealing with are anything but straightforward. After all, what could be more mysterious than relationships with one's past?"
