M. Night Shyamalan wants to direct final Harry Potter film

(Posted In Cult Rumors Sci-Fi / Fantasy )

MNShyamalan.jpgThis is just peculiar news. I have to share...

Sixth Sense director M. Night Shyamalan says he wants to shoot the final episode of Harry Potter, promising his version will be dark and twisted.

The horror director says he sees great potential for conflict in the film, including the loss and betrayal of Harry's best friend Ron Weasley, who joins the forces of evil.

He hopes it will help the audience see that power is a double-edged sword.

Although the final Harry Potter book is still being written, author J.K. Rowling has revealed two of the leading characters will die.

Film critic Jason Solomons says it is very possible Shyamalan will have the opportunity to shoot the film. Warner Brothers considers the director to be an important partner because their last collaboration was a box office hit.

It's compelling and boggling at the same time. Somehow I think he could do it. I like him. Or, I really want to like him. Reason being, MNS is one of those directors that borders on auteur but has frustrated the art house crowd and perhaps has already lost the laymen viewer because he painted himself into a corner with his here-comes-the-big-twist-at-the-end signature that started losing us in Unbreakable and ultimately ended up failing him by the time The Village came around.

What do you think? There are far more passionate Harry Potter fans out there who must have an opinion about this. Would you want M. Night Shyamalan directing the final chapter of your much beloved Harry Potter series?

I'd rather see Cauron do the rest of them, personally. But as long as it keeps Chris Columbus and Mike Newell stay away from the directors chair, I wouldn't mind Night.

I will come back to this question after I see Lady in the Water :-)

Warner Bros and Shyamalan's FIRST collaboration doesn't even get released until Friday, so I'd love to know where Mr Solomons got his time machine from.

WTF??? Since when does Ron Weasley join the dark side?? Did J.K. say that or...huh?

» Posted by Jake Brahm at July 20, 2006 03:34 AM

I still wish they had gone with Terry Gilliam.

I 100 % totally agree with Anonymous.

though I must say, I wouldn't mind a M. Night Harry Potter either. so I want both.

If he does direct it, who do you think will he play in the film? Is Harry old enough in the final book for Night to take over the role himself?

» Posted by Caterpillar at July 20, 2006 07:49 AM

i am 100% sure that MNS should direct the last verison or Harry Pooter. After i watched the sixth sense i was crazy abt da movie. he is definitly #1 on ma list!!!!! PLZ pick him........i sound so corny

Well, like you said Night has painted himself into a corner and he must be thinking of ways to reinvent himself. One of those options is to cleanse the palette with a franchise film, and what better way to become a bonafide studio director than with one of the biggest franchises there is?

"WTF??? Since when does Ron Weasley join the dark side?? Did J.K. say that or...huh?" -Jake Brahm

This was all on the pottercast podcast that he did an interview on. J.K. Rowling never said anything about Ron joining the dark side. MNS was just thinking that it would be an interesting inside-the-heart struggle kind of thing if he [Ron] were to. He also said he has not read books 4, 5, or 6.

As far as him directing the seventh book, I completely say YES!

Anonymous needs to smoke a fatty apparently. Or take some ridilin. Regardless, MNS may need to stop smoking fatties, because he apparently believes he knows the direction of the last book before Jo Rowling's even finished it. I highly doubt Ron is going to go all Anakin Skywalker on us. He may be surly, but he's loyal. Besides, Hermione would have a serious problem with that as would his mother. The way I see it (pure speculation here) Voldemort will kill or mortally wound Harry and Neville will then kill Voldemort. There you go. Two major characters dead and the prophecy is fulfilled.

And yes, I've read the books. Multiple times. Every summer in fact. Am I weird?

Great, just what we need, an excruciatingly slow-paced HARRY POTTER film with a crappy twist at the end. Oh, someone had to say it!

» Posted by DarkmanPoe at July 20, 2006 11:35 AM

Damn! I haven't even seen the fourth one yet. I didn't know Ron was gonna be bad. Oh well.

» Posted by Tory at July 20, 2006 12:17 PM

I would just be afraid that it would become "M. Night Shyalaman's Harry Potter" Rather than the final entry in the series.
Mike Newell did a fantastic job on the fourth one but I would love to see Guillermo Del Toro get his chance to do one. Then maybe he could get the dough to make At the Mountains of madness.

I don't think he would be a bad choice for Harry Potter, in fact it would suit his artistic style. However I do think he will clash with Rowlings if their vision cross paths.

He needs to do something different anyway. He hasn't made a decent movie since the sixth sense.

The village and Signs were just dreadful. I mean how many aliens would want to populate a planet when their one weakness happens to make up 2/3 or the planet!
And the Village was just a really really really poor mans version of a twilight zone episode!!! I mean come on!!

To gain Hermione's affection, Ron (lookin more manly with a porn-stache) and Harry (sans glasses, Lasik baby) duel to the death with their sorcerer-wielding broomsticks. "Why don't you take your broomstick...polish it up reeaaal good, turn it up sideways...and stick it up your candy-muggle-a$$!" an emphatic Ron exclaims.

--SPOILER--turns out Lord Voldermort is none other than M. Night Shyamawahdi!!

Just bring John Williams back to score the future films. His magis is much needed.

» Posted by JunoReactor at July 20, 2006 04:03 PM

How many chances does MNS get? the reviewers are right this guy is finished...

» Posted by MNS go away at July 20, 2006 10:32 PM

Agree with Swarez. Del Toro's got the chops and the atmosphere and tone in spades, especially for the final entry in the series, which I expect to be pretty dark indeed. Plus, practical creature effects! And, as stated, it would give him the loot to finish one of his more personal projects. Everybody wins.

I think he would be a great director for any of the remaining Harry Potter books. I think that a lot of people who have not read the books realize that the movies have geared them more towards children, but they only get darker and bring up more issues.

I just wanna say. In Signs, they were not taking over the planet, they were harvesting humans. They came for us not the planet so they had no intension of living here it was kind of like a drive by thing if u get what i mean.
Personally i'm a fan of M. Night, i just think people don't understand his films well enough so they can only trash talk them. I thought Lady In the Water was just wonderful, and he's deffinately an inspiration to me.
As far as directing a Harry Potter, i think it's fine so long as he stays true to the book and doesn't add any non-existing twists and turns in the end. If anything i'm just wondering how the casting is gunna work cuz none of them fit the age that they're supposed to be so.... i'm worried that'll wreck it some.
So M. Night for directer, totaly for it. keeping the same cast, good luck with all that.
