CHUNGMURO NEWS
==============================

Guess what? 괴물 (The Host) has broken another record: this time it's become the film holding the highest number of tickets sold in one day. The film sold a total of 790,000 tickets on July 29, which is not only a good 200,000 more than the previous record holder -- 태극기 휘날리며 (Taegukgi) -- but what many films have a hard time reaching in their entire theater run. So what does this mean? That in 3 days, Bong Joon-Ho's latest tour de force sold close to 1.9 Million tickets, and should become the fastest film to reach the 2 Million by later today. I don't think we need stills or trailers to see what this 'monster' really is. [Yahoo Korea - 7/30]

Another record falls down thanks to Bong Joon-Ho's 괴물 (The Host). The film beat the record for best opening day of all time, with 450,000 tickets. And now it has become the fastest to reach the Million mark, in a mere two days. Box Office results as of yesterday indicate the film sold 1,087,942 tickets nationwide so far, and producers Cheongeorahm expect to hit the 2 Million by this weekend. [Yahoo Korea - 7/29]

We talked about 괴물 (The Host)'s incredible opening day of online presales, but then here's another record coming: with a stunning 620 screen release nationwide, Bong Joon-Ho's third feature film will enjoy the largest release ever for a film in Korea, with around one third of the country's theaters showing the film starting tomrrow. This beats 태극기 휘날리며 (Taegukgi)'s previous record of 540. Consider every print costs around 2 Million Won to make, we're dealing with around 1.1 Billion Won (some theaters use the same print), which would mean enough money to cover production budget for 달콤, 살벌한 연인 (My Scary Girl). What's even scarier? Theaters demanded around 700. SEVEN HUNDRED SCREENS! Monster, indeed... [DVD Prime - 7/26]

After her latest horror film 아파트 (Apartment) failed to make a mark at the box office, you could safely predict Go So-Young would go back to star vehicles, and that's exactly what's happening. Go has been cast in the melodrama 언니가 간다 (I'm Going), directed by Kim Chang-Rae and Produced by Sio Film. The film tells the story of a woman whose life is turned upside down because of her first love, turning her personality into the one of the man she loved 12 years earlier. This is Go's first melodrama since 1999's 러브 (Love), but this film will have many more comic elements. The film will start shooting next month at the earliest, and Go's partner will be 안녕하세요 하느님 (Hello, God!)'s Yoo Geon. [Yahoo News - 7/25]

Oh my. If you're a K-Drama fan, you probably remember Yoon Seok-Ho's 'masterpiece' (of doom) 가을동화 (Autumn Fairy Tale), which recorded impressive ratings in 2000. Well, it's going to be remade into a film by Poibos, who bought the rights from KBS Media, after also buying rights to make 겨울연가 (Winter Sonata) from the same PD. Both projects will be produced by Culture Cap Media, a subsidiary of Poibos. No plans have been made yet, including casting and director, but they'll surely try to appeal to the Korean Wave fanbase as much as they can. This adds to the growing number of Dramas being remade into films, joining the sitcoms 올드미스 다이어리 (Old Miss Diary) and 안녕, 프란체스카 (Hello, Francesca), along with the short Drama 태릉 선수촌 (Taereung National Village). [Daum News - 7/13]

The success of 달콤, 살벌한 연인 (My Scary Girl) is clearly reaping rewards for Park Yong-Woo. After rising to semi-star status with the thriller romcom, Park has in fact become one of the most sought after actors in the business. He's currently shooting the black comedy 조용한 세상 (The World of Silence) with Kim Sang-Kyung, and he's just been cast in another detective role. Park will in fact lead Jin Gwang-Gyo's 뷰티풀 선데이 (Beautiful Sunday), produced by Cineline II of 말아톤 (Marathon). In the film, which sounds a little like 사생결단 (Bloody Tie) -- perhaps without the nastiness -- Park plays a detective who is forced to join hands with a gang, to save his wife. The film will start shooting next month, for an early 2007 release. [Daum News - 7/13]

Interesting news concerning Bong Joon-Ho. The director of 괴물 (The Host), who is getting ready for the film's release on July 27, will join a film tentatively entitled Tokyo Project. The omnibus project will feature 20 Minutes shorts from Bong, Leo Carax and Aki Kaurismaki, with the common motive of Tokyo as the main theme. Bong will start working on this project around the end of the year, but still no words on when the film will release. [Yahoo Korea - 7/13]

After 화려한 휴가 (Splendid Holidays) dealing with the Gwangju Massacre, here's another 'touchy' period film in the making, 노근리 전쟁 (The Bridge at No Gun Ri). Korean History buffs might be familiar with the little village in North Chungcheong Province, theater of a massacre of over 200 civilians (believed to be North Korean infiltrators by a US Cavalry regiment) between July 26 and 29, 1950. Theater director Lee Sang-Moo is directing this MK Pictures production with an interesting modus operandi: most of the actors and staff are working on a no-guarantee basis. And the cast has been announced already: leads are Moon So-Ri and Moon Sung-Geun, followed by Kang Shin-Il, Lee Dae-Yeon, Choi Yong-Min, Kim Seung-Wook and more. So thanks to that, the film will be made for a mere 900 Million Won, and considering the theme it covers, most of those who joined the project did so because of its message. The film starts shooting on August 20, for a Summer 2007 release. [MSN News - 7/11]

Despite the recent domination by Hollywood blockbusters at the box office, the first half of 2006 didn't go quite as bad as panicking journalists are saying. A recent report by CJ CGV noted that in the first half of 2006 Korean films accounted for a total market share of 59.5%, thanks to 왕의 남자 (The King and The Clown)'s success, a 3.7% increase over last year's figures. Of course the second half of the year is likely to see a decrease, as Hollywood films have been on top of the box office since May, but that could change soon with the release of 한반도 (Hanbando) -- panned by just about everyone, but a potential big hit with the older audience -- and 괴물 (The Host) -- which just had a very successful press screening, report either later today or tomorrow. Out of the Top 10 films all year round, 7 were Korean, and total admission went up 20.8% to 88,095,096. [Yahoo Korea - 7/5]

It might not have been the huge hit his fans hoped it would become, but Ryu Seung-Wan's 짝패 (The City of Violence), and its good performance at the box office opened a few, new doors in Chungmuro. A new 'brand' for low-budget HD Action films has been formed by CJ Entertainment, Jung Doo-Hong's Seoul Action School and Nabi Pictures, who signed a MOU to produce films like The City of Violence, using SAS' know how in the genre, and CJ Entertainment's marketing power to make those films travel overseas. Nabi Pictures produced 무사 (Musa: The Warrior) and the upcoming Wuxia 중천 (The Restless), so they're definitely not newcomers on the scene. This new brand plans to produce around 5 films this year, and scripts are already in development, with Kim Sung-Soo -- director of Musa -- and Jung Doo-Hong acting as producers. Even though the budget for each of those works will be around the 1 Billion Won, thanks to the SAS the action will definitely be on par with the best Korea has to offer. Kim commented that even if those films don't have a big impact in terms of theatrical performance, they plan to build a strong fanbase both at home and abroad for Korean action films at least through DVD. All the films will be directed by newcomers. [Cine21 - 7/4]

Despite getting negative reviews, it seems like 아랑 (Arang), the first horror film of the season, will not do too badly at the box office. Figures for June 28 and 29 were released, and the film starring Song Yoon-Ah and Lee Dong-Wook landed at second place behind predictable leader Superman Returns. Released over 227 nationwide screens, the film sold a total of 113,000 tickets so far, with 33,000 in the capital. Predictably poor the results for the 'adult' animation 아치와 씨팍 (Aachi & Ssipak) with 27,900 tickets, continuing domestic animation's bad luck at the box office. Although by the end of the week Superman Returns should still be on top, it looks like the horror will continue to do decently, just like Yoo Ha's 비열한 거리 (A Dirty Carnival), which clearly suffered competition from Hollywood blockbusters and the World Cup, but is slowly improving its score thanks to positive word of mouth. Of course the other big news of the day is that production in all of Chungmuro will be halted for three days, with thousands of film people participating in street demonstrations, as today marks the official reduction of the screen quota to 73 days per year. [Yahoo Korea - 7/1]

Now this is peculiar. We heard of films like 한반도 (Hanbando) and 시간 (Time) revealing very little to the press, but how about a film starting and concluding its shoot without saying a thing. No cast information, no outlines sent to the press... nothing. Until today, which marks the end of shooting for 두뇌유희 프로젝트, 퍼즐 (The Puzzle), a new crime thriller produced by Cinema Service, and directed by Kim Tae-Kyung of 령 (The Ghost). Moon Sung-Geun, Joo Jin-Mo and Hong Seok-Cheon were cast in the film, which is releasing on September 14, and whose trailer has been shown at the press screening for Hanbando. This is quite the unique marketing strategy, an will see if it'll help the film in the long run. [MyDaily News - 6/27]

Although 혈의 누 (Blood Rain) did quite well last year, Cha Seung-Won's tentative to expand his acting spectrum met with a little obstacle thanks to the flop of Ahn Pan-Seok's 국경의 남쪽 (Over The Border) - despite positive reviews. Cha is in fact going back to comedies, but looking at the director he's working with should reassure most people. Cha, alongside ad-lib master Yoo Hae-Jin who's making his leading debut after his great work in 왕의 남자 (The King and The Clown), have been cast in 이장과 군수 (The Chief & The Governor), a new Human Comedy by Jang Gyu-Seong, who already worked with Cha in 선생 김봉두 (My Teacher, Mr. Kim) and also directed 여선생VS여제자 (Lovely Rivals). The two characters first meet as 반장 (class president) and Vice president in their school days, but repeat their rivalry as adults, with one being a village headman and the other as county governor. This is Cha's first comedy since Kim Sang-Jin's 귀신이 산다 (Ghost House), which did extremely well in 2004, and Jang revealed that he had him in mind ever since the script writing stage. The film starts shooting at the end of July, for a early 2007 release. [Daum News - 6/26]

You know already there's two versions of 황진이 (Hwang Jin-Yi) in production right now: one on TV, another on the big screen, which already cast Song Hye-Gyo as Joseon's most famous concubine. What we didn't know was who would play her partner, which has just been decided. Yoo Ji-Tae will in fact play Hwang's first man, in Jang Yoon-Hyun's upcoming Sexy Sageuk. Yoo plays a Yangban approaching marriage, who decides to 'have fun' on his last day as a free man, but his meeting with concubine Hwang creates some warm feelings inside him... and you know the rest. This is quite a departure for Yoo, who has never been in a Sageuk -- just like Song. Based on a North Korean novel by Hong Seok-Joong, Hwang Jin-Yi will continue casting until mid July, and start shooting by the end of next month. [Yahoo Korea - 6/26]

He played a silent killer with sad eyes in 형사 Duelist, a convicted murderer in the upcoming 우리들의 행복한 시간 (Maundy Thursday), and now a kidnapper. Is Kang Dong-Won in a bad mood or something? After adding recently-married Kim Nam-Joo to the initial casting of Seol Kyung-Gu, Park Jin-Pyo's upcoming 그놈의 목소리 (His Voice) just added another piece to the puzzle, as Kang will play said kidnapper. The role is interesting, as only his 'silhouette' and voice will appear in the film, a sort of low-key, more commercial version of 살인의 추억 (Memories of Murder), based on the 1991 Lee Hyung-Ho kidnapping case. So now we have the full picture: Seol is playing the father of the kid, Kim Nam-Joo the mother, and Kang plays 'him' (The 놈 of the title). Now all that's left is casting the kid -- please, not Lee Jae-Eung AGAIN, uh? -- and the film will finally start shooting in early July, for a Winter release. [Daum News - 6/26]

After being almost cast as Haemosu in 주몽 (Jumong), Kim Seok-Hoon will be back to the big screen in (another?) Jopok comedy 마강호텔 (Magang Hotel), his first role since Kim Soo-Hyun's acclaimed 2004 black comedy 귀여워 (So Cute). This is a first for Kim, who will play a gangster who gets 'demoted' to the countryside after one of the 'family's business ventures goes belly up thanks to him. The object of contention this time becomes the hotel of the title, owned by a woman -- played by Kim Sung-Eun of 별난여자 별난남자 (The Bizarre Bunch) -- and 'protected' by local gangs. The film will have its opening ceremony on the 27th, and start shooting soon after, for a late 2006 release. [Yahoo Korea - 6/26]

NEW FILMS - PRESS REACTIONS
======================================

daddypress.jpg플라이 대디 (Fly, Daddy, Fly), dir. Choi Jong-Tae [Cast: Lee Joon-Gi, Lee Moon-Shik, Poppin' Hyun-Joon, Kim Ji-Hoon, Lee Jae-Yong]
- [Na Ha-Na, Cineseoul]
"Our hero who protects the Earth with his incredible powers, neither too mature nor too childlike, right in the middle of Father and Dad, 대디 (Daddy). Extremely shy Jang Ga-Pil (Lee Moon-Shik) finds himself two tasks to complete: the hero protecting the family, and the kind of dad from Shin Gu's generation. To save his daughter Ga-Pil starts a solitary struggle, and meeting too mature for his own good Seung-Seok (Lee Joon-Gi) he embodies both of those roles. Lee Moon-Shik perfectly shows the conflicting emotions of middle class urbanities with his body language and facial expressions, perhaps the biggest highlight of the film. But the film puts too much weight on his shoulders, on the other hand. Both those figures, Hero and Daddy, appear in the film. But they never seem to feel like something coming from the same person, in a way."
- [Choi Kwang-Hee, Film2.0]
"Because Go Seung-Seok (Lee Joon-Gi) is portrayed as such a model person (enough to cause goosebumps sometimes!), then it's actually the person behind that facade that fails to emerge. It might be because of the film's reliance on trying to take advantage of Lee's popularity. But more than awaiting the building of (acquired) family love between Ga-Pil and Seung-Seok you tend to focus more on the flatness which populates the film, and that's a shame. It's really a blessing Lee Moon-Shik gives such a fine performance, otherwise the film would collapse. Because of his acting many memorable scenes end up making this a cute little film."

sirpress.jpg스승의 은혜 (To Sir, With Love), dir. Im Dae-Woong [Cast: Oh Mi-Hee, Seo Young-Hee, Yeo Hyun-Soo, Lee Ji-Hyun, Lee Dong-Gyu]
- [Choi Won-Gyu, Movie Guide]
"Considering the horror films we're used to, we can't deny the fact this one bases most of its subject on the master-pupil relationship might be quite a creative, if not even dangerous challenge. At least that's certainly true for our country's industry. And the risks this film takes don't just stop there. The idea of bringing back a genre, the slasher flick, which was so maligned in the past and led to the advent of horror films focusing only on spirits could be even considered gambling. Just on a technical level (the murders) this film deserves praise. The subject never loses its chemistry, rewarding the viewers with genre-specific catharsis done in unfamiliar ways. You could say with confidence this is one of the most praiseworthy ideas amongst all the domestic horror films shown in the last hew years. But actually the film's structure does show shortcomings, especially in the middle. "
- [Heo Ji-Woong, Film2.0]
"As a Korean-style slasher this film is quite interesting in many ways. All the students growing up with the repressive educational environment and feeling a sort of silent victimism might even find delight in the actions and words of the film's character ('serves you right, you damn teachers!'). But then a certain sense of guilt ('they're teachers after all') will accompany that feeling, so this combination of conflicting sentiments creates a fresh new viewing experience. Despite adhering to the usual preconceptions of having to become a 'well made' film and having a melodramatic second half, the fact the film keeps the basic enjoyment of traditional slashers alive is something we can't criticize."

--

lumppress.jpg각설탕 (Lump of Sugar), dir. Lee Hwan-Kyung [Cast: Im Soo-Jung, Park Eun-Soo, Yoo Oh-Sung]
- [Yoon Go-Eun, Yeonhap News]
"Using the same kind of sentiment emerging between people and animals we've been accustomed to thanks to Hollywood Films might be effective. But the problem is the film isn't as smart as those Hollywood films. You can clearly sense the producers' intention, using purity as their motto, friendship as the film's message and trying to stress authenticity and genuine sentiments. Yet, the drama doesn't hold up, and the structure collapses in the second half. Certainly the film shows some welcome differences from the norm, such as the fresh plot and Im Soo-Jung's acting skills help immensely. But we only get to taste that sugar cube on the tip of our tongue, nothing more."
- [Choi Won-Gyun, Movie Guide]
"A girl, an animal, family love, friendship... people walking step by step, never surrendering to this dry, harsh world for their beautiful values. This is the kind of 'wholesome' family film we're pretty much used to but every time ends up touching us. But if there's anything special about this film, it's the tentative to experiment with family films involving animals, something rarely seen in Korea. So in that sense even if you might not end up completely satisfied the film is at least interesting. Along with 달콤, 살벌한 연인 (My Scary Girl) and 괴물 (The Host) this film will end up being another proof of how much genre Cinema has improved in Korea."

--

hostrev.jpg괴물 (The Host), Dir. Bong Joon-Ho [Cast: Song Kang-Ho, Byun Hee-Bong, Bae Doo-Na, Park Hae-Il, Go Ah-Sung]
- [Lee Sang-Yong, Film2.0]
"You could say the real monster here is Bong Joon-Ho's film itself, blending the familiar image of monsters in Hollywood films with the intricacies of Korean society. Showing the collapse and union of a family is certainly a traditional story, but it never feels like a Hollywood film. And that's because this is Bong Joon-Ho's twisted portrait of today's Korean Society, and the kind of world he showed since Barking Dogs Never Bite. The image of the monster is very vividly portrayed, but the film never lets go of the scariest thing, that of the monster's shape and forms we create inside our minds. The real forces creating this monster, this 'host' carrying all those acts are indeed a country's power and system themselves. But it's not one of those heavy handed films, as it never lets go of its unique humour, dealing with tragic situations with a smile on the face. That's a sign of a director with remarkable skills."
- [Choi Kwang-Hee, Film2.0]
"Just as people were saying, it's even better than expected, a true tour de force. The drama's tight suspense combines with well timed humour giving a fresh new flavour, just like polished directing perfectly meets with advanced production values. Finally a mainstream film that's both entertaining and has a strong, unique meaning has come out. Just like what he did in Memories of Murder, Bong has effectively combined genre tropes with a calm but at the same time passionate social commentary, proving once again what a master filmmaker he is. The ensemble featuring Byun Hee-Bong, Song Kang-Ho, Park Hae-Il, Bae Doo-Na, Go Ah-Sung and so on is just as great."

--

hanbanrev.jpg한반도 (Hanbando), Dir. Kang Woo-Suk [Cast: Ahn Sung-Gi, Moon Sung-Geun, Jo Jae-Hyun, Cha In-Pyo, Kang Su-Yeon]
- [Lee Sang-Yong]
This schematic division between good and bad is not too pleasant, and it's hard to fall for Drama dealing with such gigantic issues with simplistic characters like these. Sure, the characters in 실미도 (Silmido) followed a simple structure too, but following the story of repressed minorities hidden by history had its own power back then. But since characters on Japan's side and those in the parliament are portrayed without taking sides, it's likely they won't appeal to the masses. That's because looking at the reasons of 왕의 남자 (The King and The Clown)'s success as a sort of re-imagining history through modern lenses gave space for a variety of different interpretations.
- [Kang Sang-Ryul]
Dealing with Korean Society's most vulnerable aspects filtered through a mainstream POV has always been one of Kang Woo-Suk's distinguishing traits. In 공공의 적 (Public Enemy) he had penniless Seol Kyung-Gu knock down the perfect man, in 실미도 (Silmido) he gave people a sense of catharsis in bringing up certain sentiments about North Korea during that accident. In 한반도 (Hanbando), Kang stimulates the Anti-Japanese sentiments the masses inevitably carry inside them. Yes, you can bring up that sentiment in people, but this is not exactly the most honest of ways. By looking at the state the peninsula is in at the moment in a cool-headed way, this kind of film won't help the current situation. And since it cannot replicate the intensity of Kang's past films, it doesn't look like it will do as well at the box office.
- [Jung Jae-Hyung]
If we put aside the film's quality for a moment, then we can certainly say as a fictional valve driving people to think about our society's contradictions and this country's particular location, Hanbando is a success. If the film creates a lot of debate on one side and the other, then that was exactly the director's intention. At the end the film never chooses between hardliners and moderates, leaving the ending open. It's just too bad that the film doesn't live up to the blockbuster budget in terms of thrills. Since the film could have done anything it wanted, maybe being a little bolder in terms of fan service would have made it more appealing.
- [Choi Kwang-Hee, Film2.0]
Is successful Kang Woo-Suk, who up to not too long ago was Chungmuro's most powerful man, eyeing the Minister of Culture job as his next target?Even if that wasn't the case, exploiting the current wave of patriotism in the peninsula through such commercial means leaves a sour taste in your mouth. To put it bluntly, 'President' Ahn Sung-Gi can't free himself from his acting mannerism, Moon Sung-Geun is still stuck with his TV narrator tone, and Cha In-Pyo's acting is terrible. Will people see this as even more of a letdown than the Swiss vs Korea game?

hey, x. for the box-office of the non-korean flicks, you should check out http://kobis.or.kr/ i think this is the site most of the webzines use for their box office numbers. i think you might already know about this site, but here it is just in case.

already using it. But it's not too reliable, as it only covers 78% of the country's theaters.

Hi X, any idea how the press reacted to Fly Daddy (Lee Moon-shik, Lee Jun-ki)? The press screening was today.

I'd be interested in the press reaction to Fly Daddy, Fly as well. The trailer looked quite interesting.

Why is the Korean Film and TV news not being updated since 31 July
2006. We religiously open this site first thing in the morning.
I hope there's no big problem and you can update it again as usual.

Thanks in advance.
