A First Taste of Prachya Pinkaew's Chocolate!

(Posted In Action Asia Film News Martial Arts )

chocolatesmall.jpgBack when the announcement was made that Tony Jaa would be taking the helm and directing Ong Bak 2 himself the explanation given for Ong Bak and Tom Yum Goong director Prachya Pinkaew's absence from the chair was that Pinkaew was currently directing a children's film called Chocolate. That's not entirely accurate. He IS directing Chocolate, but it aint no kid's flick - that would be Kid Power, which he's producing.

Chocolate, on the other hand, is the story of an autistic girl with intense fighting skills who discovers a list of debtors in her horribly ill mother's diary and decides to go collecting, only to find herself up against an organized crime ring. You gotta wonder how long after watching Danny the Dog Pinkaew wrote this, but golly, that's a tasty poster image.

It does sound a lot like DANNY THE DOG, but there's enough differences that I'm sure I'll enjoy this. Plus, it never hurts to have a person getting kicked in the dome by a teenage girl on your flier. Unless that person is you, of course, then it might be more problematic.

Has anyone ever Prachya Pinkaew asked the exact reason the company's called Baa-Ram-Ewe? Clearly it's a BABE reference, just look at the logo - but why? Not that BABE's not a great movie, but it's pretty random and I've always wondered about that. Only standard studio logo (tweaked versions don't count) I've ever seen get a laugh out of a audience. Hopefully THE HOST will go out with the very wacky Showbox logo still attached - I'm very curious to see the reaction that gets from an unsuspecting audience. I am such a dork.

Looks cool, I wonder if she is a student of Panna Rittikrai. I read somewhere (forgot where) that Panna is grooming a female athlete for a leading role in an action movie. This could be the beginning of the next action heroine for Thailand or it could be a dud depending if she got "it". I'll be keeping an eye out for this.....

I think it's all for the best that the "Jaa syndrome" if you will, has spiked an interest and (I think?) production of action films coming out of Thailand lately. This looks pretty interesting, and sure sounds like that project Panna mentioned about the 'female athlete' he said he'd found. Or maybe I'm just a sucker for the image/concept. Either way, looking forward to it!

I heard about two foreign lady villains who tries to make life hard for the autistic girl and mess her up. A lot of action. One of the bad girls is the Dutch muay thai champion Soumia.
