Masters of Horror Season 2 Line-up Shaping up

(Posted In Horror Sci-Fi / Fantasy TV USA and Canada )

Masters-of-Horror.jpgAfter having thoroughly enjoyed Miike's entry, IMPRINT, but seeing none of the rest of the series, I do not have the sour taste in my mouth that some seem to have from The Showtime Networks Masters of Horror series. The Horror Channel has some nice updates on where things are in Season 2 and which directors are participating:

Dario Argento - "Pelts"
Tobe Hoooper - "Damned Thing"
John Carpenter's "Pro Life"
Stuart Gordon - "Black Cat"
Ernest Dickerson
Joe Dante
Mick Garris
Brad Anderson
Tom Holland

Also, The Horror Channel has earmarked Don Mancini (Seed of Chucky), Don Coscarelli and Takashi Miike as 'in discussion' for Season 2 Episodes. The IMDb has Jeffrey Coombs listed in Stuart Gordon's entry. It is nice to see those two working together again! And it is really nice to see Brad Anderson given a slot in the series; in fact it gives me a warm fuzzy feeling.

Great news!! I recently saw Argento's "Jenifer" and was blown away by it. So glad to see he's following up!

Though last we heard it wasn't confirmed, Combs was Gordon's first choice to play Poe in "The Black Cat". He also has a brief appearance in Gordon's latest film, Edmund.

Another Miike, another episode Showtime won't broadcast. It'd be awesome. IMPRINT (crummy Engrish notwithstanding) was the highlight of the first season.

I really hope they make some changes in the way these things are shot, like not making them shoot with crappy Canadian actors, and allowing Takashi Miike to make a film in Japanese if it's appropriate.

They are filming in Vancouver again so you can forget about that right away. And another Don Mancini evil doll flick? Do not want. What's next, they're gonna ask Charles Band to join in and film a DEMONIC TOYS episode? But anyway, I think maybe half of the episodes will be watchable and one or two may even be good.

...I suddenly feel an overwhelming urge to defend those crappy Canadian actors! 8^)

Bad acting was the least of this show's many problems. And maybe if those "crappy actors" were given scripts and dialogue worth a shit they'd be able to do a much better job. You can only do so much when you're stuck in a piece of crap story that is rushed out under a tight schedule.

Yes, HelloCruelWorld, you are potentially stirring up a rats nest insulting the local talent of a website that is Canadian Based. Don't know if you are trolling or not, and I'm not fully aware of what canadian talent they are using in each of the 12 episodes I've not seen, but there are a shitload of fine Canadian Character actors that turn up in a lot of American Movies and TV Shows (being that a big percentage of those Movies and Shows are shot in Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver and Montreal).

The talents of Julian Richlings, Callum-Keith Rennie, Molly Parker, Colin Mochrie, Nicole de Boer and Hugh Dillon are always welcome in any production I see them in. And that is just off the top of my head.

Anyway, the bulk of your Americas top-watched Comedians have been canadian since the 1970s: Jim Carrey, Mike Myers, Eugene Levy, Rick Moranis, Dan Aykroyd, Catherine O'Hara, Micheal J. Fox, Martin Short and of course our exports of unintential comedy: Keanu Reeves and William Shatner!

But whatever, blame the actors if you will...it reveals ignorance on your part. :)

Tobe Hooper again? His episode was the worst of the bunch. I'm looking forward to seeing Imprint on DVD. It would be nice if Cronenberg and Polanski directed episodes as they truly are masters of horror.

I'm not trying to be an anti-Candian troll, I was just stating that the forced use of bad Canadian actors seemed to be quite a hinderance to the series. Maybe it also has to do with the fact the the shows were shot on an extremely tight schedule, also effecting the comedy. I'm not saying that all Canadian actors suck, by no means am I saying that. I'm just saying that the ones used on many of the Masters of Horror episodes sucked. Maybe it wasn't entirely their fault due to the shooting schedule. Really, the blame should fall squarely on the idiot producers.

» Posted by hellocruelworld at April 23, 2006 05:18 PM

Yep. It's the producers fault, not the caliber of talent here. There are LOADS of good actors in Van (just check all the shows that shoot there, all of which take all their secondary players from the local talent pool) and Canada in general. HBO's made something of a cottage industry of poaching Canadian talent, both in front and behind the camera.

I wonder if Polanski could come to Vancouver without being handed over to US authorities. I'd be thrilled to see Cronenberg direct an episode but let's face it, both he and Polanski are now miles and miles away from their early horror film days and probably don't feels like slumming it in a TV series. Despite its title of MASTERS OF HORROR, what the show really is, is an opportunity for has-beens (who can't get any directing gigs anymore or have been working in direct to video land for ages) to work again. I know they're courting successful newcomers like Rob Zombie, Eli Roth and Guillermo del Toro but I'd be very surprised if any of them would actually direct an episode.

let's not suck this time, ok?

i'm shocked that they even got funding to do a second season seeing as how so many people including myself hated a majority of the first season. i actually canceled my subscription to showtime.

if they bring back "dead like me" i might renew.

The episodes were cheap to film and I'm actually pretty sure they made a profit on sales to TV and foreign distributors alone. They'll make more money once the DVDs are released because even those who think the majority of the first season was crap will buy some of the episodes they did like ...

The lack of new "names" on this line up doesn't suprise me. And the new names? Jesus, what talent. The folks who directed "Bones", "The Machinist" and the writer of "Child's Play". How are these clowns "Masters"? Mick Garris is a pandering ass who has no grasp on what even makes a decent anthology series. If it wasn't for Penn And Teller's "Bullshit", I'd be canceling Showtime, too.
