Scrap Heaven. by Lee Sang-Il (Sang-Il Lee). R1 USA from Kino on June 6th 2006.

(Posted In Asia Cult DVD News Drama Trailer Alert )

scrapheavenDVD.jpegThere you go, that's more like it, an R1 release for a recent Japanese movie that caught my eye when I watched the trailer last year - Sang-Il Lee's (according to IMDB, Lee Sang-Il elsewhere) 'Scrap Heaven' starring Chiaki Kuriyama. Mixed messages on if the Japanese DVD (R2 NTSC, due March 24th 2006) will actually have English Subtitles, but the major thing here for me is this is a recent film getting a quick shift to somewhere that makes it accessible - better than it often is for R1 USA releases as we know. Fingers crossed for a decent transfer though.

Great news! Picking this up.

He's already shooting his next film, フラガ-ル I think? Sounds fun.

Good news on English subs for the Japanese DVD - it'll have 'em.

"Sang Il-Lee's (according to IMDB, Lee Sang-Il elsewhere)"

According to IMDb it's Sang-Il Lee, not Sang Il-Lee. Sang-Il Lee makes sense, because Lee is the family name. So Sang-Il Lee is the same als Lee Sang-Il, only on IMDb they always use the western order, with the family name at the end.

It's as easy as 3-1-2. ^_^

yeah. He's a Zainichi. Lee is the family name, Sang-Il the name. A.k.a. Sai Yoichi.

Some weird licensing going on... just noticed at dvdactive that Manga has picked up SS 5+. http://www.dvdactive.com/news/releases/survive-style-5.html

Can't say that it's a good thing, based on Manga's often flawed anime releases.

» Posted by Fabool at March 8, 2006 09:32 AM

would that imply an R1 release for SS5+ as well?

» Posted by philia at March 8, 2006 10:01 AM

hey, i knew there was a good chance i would get held up on the name... theyre too damn confusing : all i know is, 'film is interesting, must pass on news'...

» Posted by logboy at March 8, 2006 10:20 AM

no sign of 'survive style 5+' at play.com, amazon.co.uk or the official manga UK site, but i took a nose at the BBFC.co.uk site and spotted this : theyve also had koreeda's 'maborosi' recertified in the past week, so this will be appearing in a subbed UK disc from manga also... wonder if theres a trend in them shifting to live-action releases?

a quick way for Korean names is looking at the '-'.

Of course family names like Park, Lee, Jung, Choi, Song should be familiar, but just in case, they're written like this:

FAMILYNAME Given-Name

So it's SONG Kang-Ho, KIM Ki-Duk (which is why calling him 'Ki-Duk' sounds like calling Spielberg 'Stevie') and so on.

Same for China and Hong Kong (although that's easier as most have a Western Name too).

FAMILYNAME Givenname - ZHANG Yimou (so Mr. Zhang and not Mr. Yimou).

Japanese by now should be familiar, and Thai's still very difficult cause both Family and given name are often very long.

As was reported here and there on Twitch, Sang-il Lee's upcoming movie is Hula Girl (Fura gâru).

Looking forward to this one, having really enjoyed SixtyNine. Thanks for the heads up on the R1.
