Now this is the point that even the most desperately dedicated Japanese (and any other Cinema) film fan might come across a few (or, probably, many more : I've just read this...) gems in the MidnightEye 'Best and Worst of 2005'. Some have had heavy coverage here at Twitch, some have had slight mentions, some appear only in the comments sections of posts about other films, some are out there in Japan and elsewhere on DVD to be picked up now - Canary (out in Japan with subs), Linda (x3!), Rampo Noir, Buried Forest, Kekexili (out in the UK amongst other places), Dumplings (in HK and late February in the USA), Mind Game (in Japan with subs), Taste of Tea (yep, in Japan with subs) and so on... always a great read, and a useful guide too.
Then there's a couple of reviews, 'Yaji and Kita' (out in Japan on DVD with English Subs) is one that, due to finances at the time, I need to go back to - but we've reviewed and covered it here with the trailer too. Then there's one I have watched recently, and it's one of the superb Eureka! 'Masters of Cinema' releases on R2 UK DVD - Shohei Imamura's 1979 serial killer journey film 'Vengeance Is Mine' which is a stunning gem of a film. As usual, a whole host of other stuff over there too - including a piece on recent Akira Kurosawa films which appeared on disc.

And remember to vote in the "best of 2005" reader poll!
Gave my vote to Tony Takitani, which was overall, the best film of the year (the world, not just Japan) for me from those that I got the chance to see.
nice work as always. Voted too (Princess Raccoon, love Master Suzuki more than ever).
